Midway Heights Family Newsletter
February 2018
See everyone at Parent/Teacher Conferences the week of February 12!
Mrs. Gerzen
Oh my goodness! I can’t believe it is February. This school year is flying by! It is time to talk Summer School...
Columbia Summer SUNsation (Summer School)
Columbia Public Schools will be offering summer school at West Boulevard Elementary for Midway Heights students this summer! Transportation will still be provided for those students that would have had transportation to Midway. Our school is going to have some work done, so we will not be able to be at Midway. We are currently planning the program designed to meet individual needs and to help students start off in the fall with a solid foundation on which to build a successful year. It is our hope that a majority of our students will take advantage of this FREE program.
The purpose of summer school is:
· To provide engaging and challenging learning opportunities for students to develop and extend their learning and development.
· To provide engaging instructional experiences that enable students to increase their proficiencies in core content areas.
· To provide support for students transitioning into school (PreK to K) or into a new grade level.
· To provide differentiated instruction for students who need extra support to meet grade level expectations in reading, writing and/or mathematics.
· To provide enrichment for those students currently working above grade level expectations.
Program Dates & Times
June 4th through June 28th 8:00am-3:20pm
Program Location
West Boulevard Elementary (bus service will be provided for those eligible for one during the regular school year).
Enrollment
Enrollment information will be available at parent/teacher conferences. Enrollment is done on a first come basis, so complete forms promptly once you receive them to ensure a space.
Looking forward to seeing everyone at Parent/Teacher Conferences later this month!
We had 100% attendance at last Parent/Teacher Conferences, let’s hit 100% again!
Enjoy the month of February!
PTA President Notes
Been thinking about serving on the Midway PTA Board? It’s not too late! Elections for new officers will be held at the spring Book Fair. Board positions that are vacant for next year are PTA President and secretary. Let us know by February 20th if you want your name thrown in the hat and we’ll get you on the ballot…
Speaking of February 20th, that is our next PTA meeting. Come and join us at 6:00pm in the Book Room. Dr. Jill Brown will speak at the meeting about the upcoming Bond issues.
Thank you!

Nurse Notes
We are seeing cases of influenza (true flu), strep throat, stomach upsets and the common cold on the rise in our Midway students. Please follow the CPS illness policy in determining if your child should be at school or not.
Per CPS policy, students should not come to school if during the previous 24 hours they exhibit any of the following symptoms:
- A temperature of 100 degrees or greater.
- Vomiting and/or diarrhea.
- An unusual or unexplained rash.
- Persistent cough.
Help keep your child healthy by making sure they eat a healthy diet, drink plenty of fluids, get plenty of rest, practice good handwashing, “catch” their cough/sneezes and generally avoid others who are ill.
Come. Stay. Read a Great Tale!
Get ready for the Spring Scholastic Book Fair! The Fair will be held the week of Parent-Teacher Conferences, February 12-15. Hours of the fair are as follows:
