Waipawa School

Term 4, Week 4 9th November 2022

At Waipawa we value:

Kia ora koutou,

The term is sliding along quite quickly and next Friday 18 November we are having a Teacher-Only Day. Unlike the Teacher Only Day in Term 3 which was focussed on learning for the staff, next week's Teacher Only Day is focussed on workload and having a day to meet the end-of-year demands and get stuck into the final numeracy and literacy reports for the year.

We welcome Emma Ferguson to the Waipawa Primary staff. Emma joins us as a Teacher Aide on a short-term contract until the end of the year.

2023 is on the horizon and a lot of work is being done to get the building blocks in place for a successful year. One task that is ticked off (unless there are some late-year happenings) is the teaching team lineup. We've made one new appointment for 2023. Lucy Thompson will be joining us at Waipawa in 2023. Lucy has been teaching for 4 years and is currently at Patoka School. We are really excited about Lucy joining us, as she will be a wonderful addition to our staff, as a quality teacher who also brings strengths in the Performing Arts.

The 2023 teaching lineup:

Yr 7/8 teachers: Justine Foster (Rm 12), Lucy Thompson (Rm 11), Sharee Waite (Rm 10)

Yr 5/6 teachers: Te Aniwa O'Fee (Rm 9), Cheree Drepaul (Rm 8), Phil Masters (Rm 7 ),

Yr 3/4 teachers: Anna Oosterkamp (Rm 6), Sophie Wynn (Rm 5), Gabrielle Vallely (Rm 4)

Yr 1/2 teachers: Tania Elworthy (Rm 3), Jessica Stewart (Rm 2)

Yr 0/1 teachers: Kirsty Waru (Rm 1), Karena Finch (Kākano)

Peter Burne is still with us next year, however, he will be spending time in all rooms as a release teacher. He is full-time and is just going to have a change of scene. We are working on some initiatives that Pete will be able to focus on right throughout the school.

Along with our teaching team, we will also have our regular part-time teachers (Chelsea, Kate, Lou) through the school in some capacity. Ranier Davie is moving back to the Tech Centre for 2023.

Our teacher aide team will also be settled next year. The logistics around teacher aides are a lot different to teachers. While the Ministry tell us our staffing for teachers and also pays them, we have to manage teacher aides within our budget. Basically, the number of teacher aides in a school comes down to money. Currently, we have 8 teacher aides and we are aiming to start the 2023 year with 6-8 teacher aides spread throughout the school.

Ngā mihi nui,

Paul Jamieson

Athletics Update

We were nervous today about the forecast but thought we may just get away with it. As it turned out it was one of these 50/50 calls and we took the safe option. Athletics is one when we need to err on the side of caution. The nature of athletics is that there is a lot of sitting around and when the ground surface is slippery it makes many of the events quite tricky and on occasions dangerous.

We will now run the Kākano to Room 3 athletics on Monday 14 November.

At this stage we are still planning to run the Room 4 - Room 12 athletics tomorrow. The weather forecast is again looking 50/50. Because it is a 3.5 hour event we will err on the side of caution. A decision will be made by 8:00am and communicated via HERO.

If tomorrow is cancelled the Rm 4 - Rm 12 athletics will be held on Tuesday 15 November.

LOOK What we have been up to ...

Room 7 Seashore Creations for the upcoming Twilight Market!

Despite previous efforts being thwarted by flash floods and bridge closures, Room 7 finally made it out to Kairakau Beach, to select some great driftwood and pebbles for their 'Seashore Creations' stall for the upcoming Twilight Market on Friday 25th November. The students will now be hard at it designing and making a variety of mini beasts, monsters, shelves, candle holders, swords, wands, unicorns, painted pebbles and other delights for their market stall. Before returning to school, the class also had just enough time for a beach soccer game, including whanau guest star players!
