Hello TLA Families,
What an amazing and busy week! This week we celebrated Staff Appreciation Day, contributed to the community during Service Learning Day, and ended the week with a pop of personality for Dress Down Day. We couldn't have done any of this without our hardworking, dedicated, and loving staff. We are so fortunate to be surrounded by people who are equally invested in achieving the TLA Vision and ensuring ALL scholars live happy, choice-filled lives. Thank you for celebrating the staff and this amazing partnership. The kind words and gifts were heartwarming and greatly appreciated.
It is also, in large part, because of our great staff, Mrs. Laura Benisch, in particular, that we were able to connect with community partners, local businesses, institution, and facilities to coordinate a collective effort of showing gratitude by giving back.
Today, May 5th is School Lunch Hero Day! THANK YOU to our school lunch nutrition team for all that they do to ensure that scholars are fed nutritious breakfast and lunch each and every day!

Catching Waves in Physical Science
This week scholars in biology class had the opportunity to dissect a sea star. They were able to observe and identify different anatomical structures, both external and internal, and how they relate to the sea star’s behavior and the environment it lives in.
Physical Science class had fun learning about refraction today in their Producing a Spectrum lab. They were able to create, observe and describe the spectrum made by a prism. They demonstrated that each color of light has a particular wavelength and by using a light source and a prism they could separate out individual colored bands into a spectrum.

Academics
The AP World History Modern Exam is May 11th @ 8:00-11:30. AP scholars are asked to arrive by 7:45 with a fully charged Chromebook, as the exam will begin promptly at 8:00 and end at 11:30. The exam fee will be posted in Skyward Family Access. Follow this link to pay for the Exam- https://payments.efundsforschools.com/v3/districts/56584. Please be aware that the exam fee is waived for some scholars. If you do not receive a bill, then the fee has been waived.
AP Exams are scored on a scale of 1 to 5. The score is a weighted combination of your scores on the 2 sections, multiple-choice and free-response. Many U.S. colleges grant credit and/or advanced placement (that means they let you skip the equivalent course once you get to college) for scores of 3 and above.
Ninth grade scholars will be taking the DPI Civics Exam on May 24th and 25th. The exam will take place during their history class. Wisconsin statute requires that any students graduating from a Wisconsin high school (starting with the class of 2017) "takes a civics test comprised of 100 questions that are identical to the 100 questions that may be asked of an individual during the process of applying for U.S. citizenship by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services and the pupil correctly answers at least 65 of those questions" (Wis. Stat. sec. 118.33(1m)(a)1, Section 3266R).
The MAP Reading Fluency Assessment is scheduled for May 22nd-25th. Scholars in K4-3rd grade will take this assessment to assess their early literacy and reading decoding skills. Here are the expectations for Spring Words Read Correct Per Minute.

Mr. Anderson's Message
Hello TLA families, we are starting the virtue of Gratitude. Gratitude is “choosing to notice and appreciate things in our life, others, and things in the world”. I would like to show my gratitude by thanking each and every one of you for being part of the TLA family. I would like to give a special thank you to our PLC for planning and putting together an amazing teacher appreciation week. We really do appreciate all that you do!!!
Next week we will be taking elementary scholars to Turtle Island for a picnic and if you would like to help chaperone your scholar please contact the classroom teacher. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Mr. Cieplewski's Message
Hello TLA families, Another amazing week at TLA. Here are some ways we celebrated scholars who have been modeling good character and working hard academically. First up, high school scholars visited ABC stadium for a Sky Carp Education Day baseball game. The scholars had an awesome time. Scholars also had another opportunity to cash in their ROAR cards. Big shout out to Brandon M-C on being the first scholar with 300 R.O.A.R. punches and cashing out for an Xbox controller.
We have a lot of learning to do, let’s continue to encourage our scholars to be kind with our actions, live well through our responses, and have a strong mindset.
Career Chat with Ms. Benisch
This week scholars wrapped up learning about hospitality careers by attending a field trip and participating in a panel. Scholars interested in hospitality careers toured Hotel Goodwin and Velvet Buffalo. Scholars learned about hotel and lodging, culinary, and marketing within Geronimo Hospitality Group during the field trip. Representatives from Hidden Creek Estates and Geronimo Hospitality Group taught scholars about event planning and the entertainment industry during the panel.
gALPHA
High school scholars, that participated in the gALPHA Program this quarter, had the opportunity to present their product idea to their fellow classmates this week. During the program scholars learned about product development, promotion, and pricing. Ideas ranged from charging stations, charging bags, clothing lines, community safe programs, and retractable chargers.
