Return to In-Person Learning Set for Oct 5 & Oct 7
Hello D103 families,
I am pleased to announce that due to the current status of COVID-19 in our area, the district is able to open in-person learning for our students in the coming weeks. The incidence rates are within acceptable ranges and the positivity rate remains stable. Because of this information, we will bring students back to school as early as the first week of October.
We have analyzed our student numbers and facilities to see if we are able to bring students back more than our 2 to 3 days a week. Due to the number of families who have chosen remote learning, we can bring back students who chose in-person for 5 days per week at all 3 schools. Unfortunately, we will not be able to transition families who chose remote learning to in-person and maintain a 5 days a week schedule. If we accepted more students into the in-person learning model, we would have to revert back to a hybrid A/B schedule (of 2 to 3 days a week of in-person learning) due to space issues. The next time families may choose remote or in-person learning or make a switch, will be in January 2021.
Details regarding in-person learning will be shared at the Thursday, September 24 Board of Education meeting at 7:00 p.m. You may access this meeting virtually on the district's YouTube channel.
We will send information describing in-person learning regarding specific procedures for families and students in the coming days. Please remember that in-person learning will look different than it ever has in the past, including transportation, entering the building, walking through hallways, in-class learning, eating lunch, using bathroom facilities, etc. This will be a challenge for all individuals involved and I know we will work together to make it happen.
Information about the in-person D103 Club program will be sent to families early next week.
To give our in-person teachers an opportunity to finalize procedures together, we will have a teacher in-service day on Friday, October 2. This will replace the teacher in-service day that was scheduled for October 13. We will then bring students into school on a rolling schedule:
Grades Early Childhood, K, 5, 6 will begin Monday, October 5
Grades 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8 will begin Wednesday, October 7
This staggered schedule will help create a more smooth transition as our new procedures will be used with a smaller group of students prior to inviting all of our in-person students back at one time.
To maintain in-person learning for an extended period of time, it is imperative that families follow the 3 main rules regarding COVID-19 safety precautions:
Wear a mask
Watch your distance (6 feet or greater)
Wash your hands
It will take our entire community to protect each other and act responsibly to keep our schools open. A few individuals failing to adhere to these guidelines and other safety precautions will cause our schools to shut down quickly. I implore all families to continue to be vigilant in protecting themselves, their families, and their neighbors so we can open our schools effectively.
Thank you for your partnership and your hard work as we continue our journey together through these difficult times.
Sincerely,
Scott Warren, Ed.D

Election Judges Sought
There is a nationwide shortage of poll workers (election judges) for this Nov. 3 election. Many existing election judges are elderly, more susceptible to Covid and have declined to work this year. Public Citizen and other non partisan groups are recruiting younger, less vulnerable workers to help assure elections this year are safe, secure, fully staffed with no elimination of polling places or action disrupting the election.
Please consider helping out at your local polling place.
