Boxes!
This week we began our exploration of BOXES, and we are thoroughly enjoying this new topic.
On Monday we spent some time examining our box collection, asking "what do you notice about these boxes?" Some children noticed they had a lot of sides; we counted them together and talked about how each side is called a FACE because it’s the part that faces out. Other children commented on the CORNERS, we explained that is the point where the faces meet on a box. We identified that this 3-dimensional shape is called a CUBE, a type of box where all sides are exactly the same size.
Boxes come in all different shapes, sizes and materials and are all around us. Later in the week we asked the children "did you use a box today?" After some discussion we identified that our breakfast cereals come in a box, juice for snack is in a box and we use boxes to store things when we clean up the classroom!
In small groups we have been comparing and measuring lengths of boxes and classifying by size. We have been counting Baa Baa Black Sheep’s bags of wool and playing ABC Bingo, learning to identify the letters in our names. At the art table we have observing and drawing a special structure.
Don’t forget to continue these discussions at home together as you come across different types of boxes in your day. Talk about each box’s characteristics. How big is it? What is it made of? Are there pictures of words on it? What shape does it have? Maybe you can transform a box into something else; a car, a castle, let your imagination lead the way. And don’t forget to send us pictures if you do!
Have a great weekend
