The Springville Saga
Springville K-8 Parent Newsletter (10/27/17)
Principal's Message
October is always a busy time in schools, and this past month was packed with great learning plus fun filled events and activities for students and staff. Most recently, our fabulous PTO hosted the Monster Mash Dance on Friday, Oct. 27 for our middle school students as well as our first ever Harvest Festival on Saturday, Oct. 28 for students and families. I posted some pictures below. By far the best part of these events was bringing our community together to build connections and have fun. I love seeing students and families play and laugh together. A big thank you to our PTO as well as Remedy Church who sponsored these events.
We also saw so many of you at Parent Teacher Conferences this month. I hope each of you were able to share something about your child(ren) at your conferences as well as learn something new about your student(s). The partnership between home and school is critical for student success, so we appreciate the support you are providing for your students. If you continue to have questions about your children’s learning, please do not hesitate to reach out to the teacher, Ellen, or me. We always welcome your input and questions.
In talking with parents recently, I have been asked a number of times "How does this year feel having everyone back together in one school?" The answer is: "It feels amazing!!" This year we are building together as a staff, student body, and community. Our 7th and 8th grade students recently went to Camp Grey for four days. And this past week, they shared their learning in our All School Gathering. I loved watching the middle school students teach our younger students about the outdoors but also about compassion and how we treat each other in a community. How we treat each other is a strong indicator of the health of a community, and it's one that we we work on every day with students. As we build together as a community, compassion is foundational.
In looking forward, we will be seeking your input for visioning of our school. I gathered information last spring in a series of grade level principal chats, and we are using that feedback as well as our achievement data to develop goals as a school. We will be sharing these with you soon to gather your input.
As always, we thank you for your incredible and unwavering support for Springville K-8. We feel fortunate to serve your students every day.

Translation Tree
In order to communicate important school and district news to our non-English speaking families, we are starting a “Springville Translator Tree.” We need one bilingual contact person for each of the languages below. The contact will be sent emails in English, translate the message into their native language and forward the translated email to other families who speak that language. The email will be as brief and succinct as possible.
Please contact Ellen Arnold if you would be willing to be our bilingual contact for any of the following languages*: Arabic, Cambodian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish, Turkish, Urdu, and Vietnamese.
* If you do not see your language above and would like to be a translator, please email Ellen Arnold at ellen_arnold@beaverton.k12.or.us . Thank you so much for your willingness to help with this important service to our non-English speaking families!
PSAT for 8th Grade
During the third week of November, all Beaverton 8th grade students will take the PSAT 8/9. Our school’s testing day that week is Wednesday, November 15.
The PSAT 8/9 is an assessment given to eighth-graders that is closely aligned to the SAT®, PSAT/NMSQT®, and PSAT™ 10. It consists of questions in Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and in Math. It helps establish a baseline for students as they enter high school and begin preparing for college and career.
Actual testing time is 2 hours and 25 minutes. There are 42 Reading Test questions, 40 Writing and Language Test questions, and 38 Math Test questions. Students are not penalized for guessing answers.
Students will receive their score reports after Winter Break.

PTO Pie Fundraiser Success!!
Our first school fundraiser through Willamette Valley Pie Company was a huge success! Many thanks to all the students, parents and community members who helped to sell pies in support of Springville K-8.
In total, the pie fundraiser brought in over $5300 in support of programs and activities for Springville K-8 students. Additionally, this fundraiser helped support a local Oregon business.
A special thank you to organizer Sara Manthe who helped plan, organize, communicate, and facilitate the many details of this fundraiser. We also want to thank the many parents who volunteered for pie distribution this past week.

Reminders & Updates
- A reminder that students should not wear costumes to school on Tuesday, Oct. 31st. Students had an opportunity to wear costumes to the Monster Mash and Harvest Festival this weekend. Thank you for your help and support with this.
- For morning drop off, please make sure students are dropped off at the curb only and not in the middle of the parking lot. This is the only way to ensure student safety.
- A reminder that dogs should not be on district property. If you bring your dog during drop off or pick up times, please stay on the sidewalk along Joss Ave.
DISTRICT NEWS
School Breakfast - Good for Kids and Good for Parents!
For parents with busy schedules, it can be hard to make sure that kids are eating a healthy breakfast before they go to school in the morning.
Sometimes children aren’t hungry right after waking up, and it’s hard to find food they like to eat that is also healthy. Also, some kids refuse breakfast at home but are hungry when they arrive at school. Fortunately, we have a great breakfast program for all students, and it’s available at school every day.
If morning meals are difficult for your family, let the School Breakfast Program help you out!
