Summer Term 2017

Summer Term!

We hope you had a good break! The children in year one have been working incredibly hard over the last few terms. It's hard to believe that we are already in the final term of this academic year.
Big picture

Our learning this term

Our topic for the term is Explorers. Here is a summary of what the children will be learning across the curriculum.

Literacy

This half term children will be writing their own poem based by James Carter - Anyone seen my dragon?... The children will look at different features of the poem and adapt it to write their own about an animal of their choice.

Our key story this half term is 'The Three Little Pigs'. During the half term we will explore different texts that retell the same story, making comparisons between them. We will then write our own stories using many fairy tale features an our 'Talk for writing' method.

Mathematics

This half term we will be revisiting additionan and subtraction. We will use dienes as a concrete resource to support children with their understanding. The children will be thinking about fact families and numbers that go together. We will teach the children about how to extend their reasoning skills so that they can articulate what they know and why they do. We will also use real-life word problems for the children to solve.

Topic

In geography we will be learning about different continents and oceans around the world. We will then focus on France and compare where we live to places in France. In science, We will also learn about different animals and how they adapt themselves to live in different environments. In computing we will learn about different algorithms. Our DT project is all about food and the children will research where food comes from. At the end of the half term the children will create a teddy bear picnic. Yum!
