New!
IDOE was chosen as one of the National Center on School Mental Health’s (NCSMH) National Quality Initiative Collaborative Improvement and Innovation Network (CoIIN) members. NCSMH is the organization that created the School Health Assessment and Performance Evaluation System (SHAPE system). We are excited for this opportunity to learn from and with school districts from Indiana and other states. The new and improved SHAPE 2.0 (which will now be one assessment instead of two) will go live in August! You can check out a demo here to get oriented. Feel free to sign up as ‘myself’ to be updated on the new release and any upcoming SHAPE news. If you have any questions about this system please contact Kristan Sievers-Coffer, ksievers@doe.in.gov or Jeff Wittman, jwittman@doe.gov.
Avon Community School Corporation Spotlight
From Jessica Yoder
Avon Community School Corporations is a Project AWARE grantee, finishing up their first year of increasing awareness, capacity, early identification/intervention, and student/family access to mental health supports through school and community-based initiatives. After hiring a mental health coordinator and four additional social workers, Avon’s Mental Wellness team began clearly defining the role of professionals (school counselors, social workers, behavior consultants, and community partner Cummins’ mental health workers). Intentional conversations about referral procedures and pathways are beginning to provide more clarity for school leaders and families seeking to meet the mental health needs of their students. For more information, please contact Krista Fay, Mental Wellness Coordinator, klfay@avon-schools.org.
The SEL and School Safety Connection
From Steve Balko
The Indiana School Safety Specialist Academy began in 1999, and has continued to evolve and grow over the past 20 years. We are continuing to focus on an all-hazards approach to school safety, and working to ensure that schools have training on the hazards they may face in their buildings. This includes training on social-emotional learning, trauma informed care, and other training on the well-being of school communities across the state. If you wish to become a certified school safety specialist please visit https://www.doe.in.gov/safety/basic-level-training. Training will be held on November 11 and 12 with a final day of training occurring on February 17, 2020. Attendance for this training must be approved by your Superintendent, and is limited to five individuals per corporation. Training is provided at no cost to the participant. Additional training opportunities are offered across the state and can be found on the school safety website: https://www.doe.in.gov/safety/regional-training. If you have any questions regarding school safety, please reach out to Steve Balko, Director of School Building Security at sbalko@doe.in.gov.
School Social Workers
From Jeff Wittman
October is bullying prevention month and it serves as a reminder that youth mental health and bullying prevention must be addressed. One way to accomplish effective prevention is through educating ourselves, our communities, and especially the youth that we serve.
