I am extremely excited about starting this new year with our wonderful families and outstanding staff members.

Birthday Treat Policy 2022
Erie Elementary will be celebrating our students’ birthdays in a new way. Birthdays are very important, as they are special milestones in the lives of our children. In lieu of bringing in a specific food product, our staff would like to offer an alternative in the form of a non-edible treat. Past birthday treats have proven to be messy, full of sugar and they sometimes add permanent stains to our students’ clothes. Switching to a non-edible treat will help eliminate those sticky situations. The following treats are suggestions for celebrating a classroom birthday with a non-edible treat:
- Classroom book
- Classroom game
- Stickers
- Pencil
- Special eraser
- Treat coupon (ex. Dairy Queen, Orange Leaf, 7-11 Slurpee)
Please contact your child’s teacher for approval and/or alternative ideas before bringing in a non-edible birthday treat for the class. Celebrating a birthday will continue to be a positive experience at Erie.
Thank you for your cooperation and continued support.

Let's Welcome our new Erie Staff Members
RaeAnne Vens - Our New Music Teacher!
Mrs. Vens is so excited to make music with the Erie eagles this year. This is her second year teaching and has recently moved to Michigan from Indiana where she grew up and earned her bachelors degree in music education. She has a huge passion for students and desires to empower each student to become the best musician and person that they can be. Through instruments, movement, games, and songs her goal is to see students grow. Expect your student to come home singing silly songs, playing fun games, or asking for a cool instrument for the holidays! Mrs. Vens cannot wait to meet everyone soon. Go Eagles!

Elizabeth Flores - Our New Blend Support Teacher
Mr. Johnson - Our New Principal
Welcome to Erie Elementary School! My name is Mark Johnson and I am the new Principal at Erie Elementary. I have been serving the Chippewa Valley community since 2005 at the elementary and secondary levels. Over the past 17 years I have been a third grade teacher at Miami Elementary, and have worked as part of the administrative teams at Iroquois Middle School, Wyandot Middle School, Shawnee Elementary and Cheyenne Elementary.
Like you, my children attend Chippewa Valley Schools. My wonderful wife is a Kindergarten/Reading Interventionist teacher at Miami Elementary, my son attends Miami Elementary, and I have two daughters who attend Chippewa Valley High School.
As an administrator I believe in building positive relationships between the school and community. My goal as Erie's Principal is to be an educational resource for staff, students and parents. At the core of every successful educational experience is a team of parents, educators, and students working together to make learning meaningful and engaging. Erie offers many programs for students and families to be involved in. Take advantage of the great events the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) coordinates and bring the whole family!
Yours in education,
Mr. Johnson
Principal
Thank you all for coming to our Sneak Peek 2022-23
A copy of Mr. Johnson's presentation was sent out to all parents.
Picture Day - September 13th
Safety at Erie Elementary
Our goal at Erie is to ensure the safety of all students and staff every day. Chippewa Valley Schools has put into place security measures for all buildings for the 2022-2023 school year.
All school doors will be locked while students are in session (8:30 AM - 3:14 PM).
When visiting during the school day, please enter through the Main North doors only. All other doors will remain locked.
Doors will be open for student arrival and dismissal, and day/evening programs.
At the Main Entrance, all visitors MUST press the "office button" for access to the office staff. There is a SACC button to notify Child Care. Please look directly into the camera and provide your name, name of your student, and teacher’s name for our employees monitoring the camera. Please present your identification to our office staff or in the case of SACC, our Child Care staff.
Student safety is always a top priority. We have outlined in this newsletter a few reminders about our parking lot to help ensure our students are safe when entering and exiting the building. Please take a few moments to read through the parking lot procedures. If we all follow these guidelines, we will have a safe parking lot for all our Erie families. Thank you for your cooperation.
Hand Hygiene:
Hand washing and hand sanitizer will be used frequently throughout the day.
Screening for Symptoms
Parents are asked to check their child each morning before sending them to school. Students that are sick should stay home from school.
Chippewa Valley Schools COVID Information
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, our top priority is always the safety of our students, staff, and school community. When making determinations on the safest way to deliver instruction, while also mitigating the spread of the virus, we rely on many sources of information. We regularly confer with the professionals at the Macomb County Health Department (MCHD) on COVID-related issues and we monitor data sources that inform of the prevalence of COVID-19 in our school community.
If your child has tested positive for COVID-19, or been exposed to a positive case, please fill out the following form. The questionnaire will help us determine quarantine time for your student. If you are reporting for multiple children, please complete a separate form for each child. After your responses are received our COVID Assistant (Laurie Freedman, (586) 723-2178) will contact you as soon as possible.

Under the direction of Mr. James Pecar, Macomb Youth Chorus is a county-wide group of singers in grades 3-12 who rehearse and perform at the Macomb Center for the Performing Arts. The intent of the Macomb Youth Chorus is to enhance and expand upon the musical opportunities that the students receive in their school or church choirs by providing additional instruction and experiences.
Weekly rehearsals will be held on Tuesday evenings.
Junior Choir (grades 3-6)
6pm – 7pm
Senior Choir (grades 7-12)
7:15pm – 8:45pm
Rehearsals emphasize the development of musicianship and vocal technique. The singers of the Macomb Youth Chorus develop musical artistry, poise, confidence, discipline and an understanding and love of the art of music.
