Science for all of 6th grade made really awesome solar ovens and made some YUMMY smores. It was a little chilly for the first block's smores to melt, but they were still tasty! We are now onto the study of Water and the Climate. Just why is it getting so cold so early?
Our trip to the Fontenelle Forest wetlands will be in the spring this year.. the wetlands are way too wet!

We had a great first quarter! Language Arts classes reviewed some skills and are now finishing up the novel Shadow Club by Neal Shusterman in preparation for his upcoming visit to Norris. After the novel, students will begin their horror unit—just in time for Halloween season. In Social Studies, students studied the beginning history of the United States and are currently making superheroes based on the laws written into the constitution and the branches of the government. Science has kids learning about different organisms, how they relate to each other, and how animals of similar appearance aren’t always related! All Math classes are working on solving equations—both two and three step equations and real world applications of math. We can’t wait to see what 2nd quarter brings!!

FOOTBALL 2019
JV
The Redbird JV football team got off to a fast start with a 48-14 win over McMillan. (sooo exciting!) The second week they beat Beveridge in a close game 20-6. In their only home game of the season , the Redbirds lost to a very good King team 8-20. And in their final game of the season , the Redbirds fell to a very good Buffett team. The players learned about basic football philosophies and player safety. They played hard , had fun and always displayed excellent sportsmanship.
Varsity
Varsity football ended the season with a 34-12 victory over Bryan to finish the year 3-3. We had a very competitive season with close losses to Marrs and Buffet. The kids showed a lot of improvement from the beginning of the year to the end and we were proud of how they grew together as a team. Our 8th graders helped build a foundation based on hard work and effort for the team next year to follow. Proud of our kids!
VOLLEYBALL 2019
While the record does not show it, the volleyball team made tremendous growth this year both on and off the court. We started the season with 3 girls being able to consistently serve over the net overhand and ended with 15 girls able. We averaged 15 points a set and can now set to positions on the court as well as tell you if they are a back row strength or a front row and what the difference is. We also ended with a GPA average of 3.12. From attending a Creighton Volleyball game to Scavenger Hunts in the building and 80's themed practice we truly created a family on and off the court. Coach Reid and Coach Parks are more than proud of the group of girls we had this year and how far they have come as well as are excited to see where the rest of the year takes them.

Activities/Actividades
Academic Pentathlon/Pentatlon Academico
In Academic Pentathlon, students are just starting to go over our curriculum, which covers the theme "In Sickness and In Health." Students started with a novel unit of Fever 1793, which included a short project over the history of epidemics and pandemics, where the students were able to choose their topic and present to their peers. Now, we are looking at medical history and the current status of healthcare in a project-based format. Additionally, we are focusing on our science unit, with the theme being causes and prevention of cancer. The students are working in groups to complete an informational presentation over their topic (causes of cancer, prevention, types, etc.), along with a review game and note-taking guide for their peers. Lots of work to do in preparation!

Robotics/Robotica
Robotics is an after school club where students work in teams of four to design, build, and program their robots. Every year the game changes; this year student's robots must be able to pick up plastic cubes and make tall stacks in their goal zones before other teams can. There is a set number of cubes on the field, and they have to gather up the cubes before their opponents can get to them first. The game has a 15 second autonomous phase, that the students program themselves, and then a 1:45 min game phase to try and score as many points as possible. There are five tournaments throughout the year, as students compete to try and qualify for state championships.
