Superintendent's Update - 10.6.2023
Dear CPS Community,
Our first full week of October is complete with today marking the 27th school day of the year. Fall is in full swing with the autumnal equinox officially beginning across the United States with much of New England at near peak leaf-peeping season. Although the weather has been warmer this past week, everyone is celebrating the “fall mood” with traditional events in our schools and throughout town.
We are entering a long weekend with no school on Monday, October 9th. The second Monday of October has been a national holiday for close to a century commonly known as Columbus Day, and this will be the second year that Indigenous Peoples Day holds the designation for observance. Although the federal government officially designates Monday as Columbus Day, many cities and towns will hold celebrations and events to recognize Indigenous Peoples Day to honor Indigenous Americans and commemorate their histories and cultures. In this week’s newsletter, please see the Town of Chelmsford Land Acknowledgment Proclamation signed by the Chelmsford selectboard members.
On September 19th, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) released the official results of the spring 2023 MCAS test administration. Our district received individual student reports for children in grades 3 - 10 who took the spring MCAS. The reports were mailed today, and families should be on the lookout for their child’s report in their mailbox over the next few days. Please contact your child’s principal if you do not receive it by the end of next week.
Please enjoy this week’s highlights and have a wonderful long weekend.
Yours truly,
Jay Lang, Ed.D.

Perhaps your student has come home in the past raving about this amazing speed painter they got to see at an assembly in their school? Now's your chance to see what all the hype was about! Join us for an hour-long mesmerizing performance by ROB SURETTE and his AMAZING HERO ART!
Rob hails from Andover and is a Top-Tier Master Fine Artist for Disney and STAR WARS. He's had guest appearances on numerous television shows and at celebrity functions. He's created art from LEGO bricks, gumballs, lipstick, Lite Brite pegs, and more!
For the Chelmsford Middle School community, Rob will be performing his award-winning "BE SOMEBODY!" speed-painting show. Thirty years ago, Rob created this show hoping that he could flood kids' minds and hearts for one hour with awe, hope, beauty, love and self empowerment: inspire them to aim at the highest possible good in life; and change the way they look at the world. Since then, he has performed it over 4,000 times!
