Campus Connections

Message from Jeff and Yolanda
This past week during National Teacher Appreciation Week we took time to thank our teachers for all that they do each and every day. Although those of us in the profession know the many hours teachers spend well beyond the work week to make a difference in the lives of students, it is heartwarming when community members recognize it. Dick Munro reiterated this point in the Naples Daily News, “I am in American” segment. For several years, we have known Mr. Munro due to his involvement with Champions for Learning and a frequent visitor to our campus during the Golden Apple process. But prior to his volunteer life, he was the Chairman and CEO of Time Warner. When he was posed with the question, “what gives you hope or what concerns you?” this is what he stated:
Public schools give me hope. The privilege to be exposed to students, teachers, and administrators gives me hope. I wish more citizens could have the opportunity to visit classrooms to observe the learning process in action, to observe the professionalism and passion the great majority of teachers bring to their classrooms every day. It is hard work and they deserve our respect and yes a raise?
Thank you for all that you do each and every day.

Happenings
The MakeIt Lab
On behalf of Marie Coleman and Vanessa Alvarez, thank you to everyone who donated recyclables last month, from shoeboxes to water bottles to toilet paper tubes. They were all used in some way or another! A class from Manatee Middle School came over and checked out our MakeIt Lab while creating their own “Caine’s Arcade”- that is, arcade games from cardboard and other recyclable materials. They came with their plans and designs and got to work right away, all of them completing their creations before they left us. They were so proud of their work and had a great time! They took a short tour of some of our tech areas and were able to enjoy a lunch from Culinary as well. Lots of thanks as well to Darlene Crete, Anne Fredette, and Anne Genoveise for helping out as well as Andy Retz, John Mazzarella, and Chef Geri, as well as their student helpers for treating the class to great hands-on activities in their tech area. Below are some pictures from our Cardboard Challenge/”Caine’s Arcade”. If you would like to see the original Caine’s Arcade, it is here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=faIFNkdq96U and is a great story!
