December 2017
Hour of Code
Hour of Code started a few years ago to take the mystery out of "coding". What the creators set out to do was to show that anyone could learn to code. And they have succeeded because I even learned the basics of coding!! During December we will be working on the Hour of Code website. I have set up links for each grade level with coding activities that would be appropriate for them. Many can be done on a computer, tablet, and/or phone, but please check the specific activity. Each 3rd Grade-5th Grade student will have their own account and can even log in at home. Links to their log in screens can also be found on the Hour of Code page on the Media Center's Google Site. See the link below to get to the activities.
We will also be working with our Dash robots and our Bee Bots. A few of our Kindergarten, First Grade, and Second Grade students got to experience them a bit before and after Thanksgiving. Check out the pictures and video on Twitter. There will also be some pictures in January's newsletter.
Storybook Tree Ornaments
I have been AMAZED by the creativity of our Hollywood students! The Storybook Ornaments have been a huge success! There has been a wide variety of characters that have been brought in, from Captain Underpants to Geronimo Stilton. If you haven't had the opportunity to send one in yet, there is still time. The last day for ornaments to be brought in is Friday December 15, 2017. This way we can enjoy all the ornaments for a week on the tree. If you do send in an ornament, please fill out the form below and send it in with the ornament. Enjoy the pictures below of some of the ornaments. I'll feature more in the January newsletter. A very creative parent created mini book ornaments for our tree. She inspired me to make my own for my tree, but I wan't sure how to start. Well it turns out she also made a YouTube video tutorial. I have featured it below.

Winter Break Reading
Over Winter Break we want to make sure our students are still reading. I'll be handing out a sheet for students to record their books the week of December 18th. Those that bring it back by January 10th will get a small prize and be entered into a drawing to win a $5.00 gift certificate for our upcoming Spring Book Fair. I've had copies of the form available for students to take during class. If you need another, please email me and I would be happy to send you a copy!
I would love to show off those who are reading over Winter Break. So if you find your child(ren) reading, email me the picture and, with permission, I'll post them on Twitter. I might even put some in the January Newsletter.
HES Media Center Blog
The HES Media Center Blog has a new post up about some of my favorite holiday books and another post will be coming about some great "cookie" books! Whenever I think about December I always think about cookies!
