Sudden Cardiac Arrest Screening
The children in our community NEED YOUR HELP!
On Saturday, May 11, 2019 from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., at 200 Trenton Road, Browns Mills, NJ, Deborah Heart and Lung Center is hosting a Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) screening for adolescents between the ages of 12 and 19 years old. We need your assistance in spreading the word and helping us get up to 300 children registered!
According to the American Heart Association, SCA, the result of an undetected and undiagnosed heart abnormality, is the number one cause of adolescent death in the U.S. It can happen before the age of 20, and often strikes healthy teenagers with no prior warning or symptoms. There have been numerous tragic deaths reported in the news during the last few years, right in our own backyard, including:
*A Holmdel High School student dies while playing lacrosse
*A 14-year-old in the Bronx suddenly collapses and dies during non-contact football practice
*An 18-year-old high school student in Teaneck dies in her sleep
*A Voorhees Township soccer player dies in her sleep during a team sleepover
*A Red Bank Regional High School basketball player collapses and dies during a scrimmage
The Sudden Cardiac Arrest Screening, sponsored by Deborah Hospital Foundation, is offered at no cost, and includes:
*Blood pressure, height and weight
*Heart auscultation (listening for a heart murmur)
*Electrocardiogram (ECG)
*If needed, an Echocardiogram (ultrasonic heart imaging)
Confidential results will be delivered to each parent -- or directly to the student if they are over the age of 18 years -- before they leave, after review by one of Deborah Heart and Lung Center’s board certified Cardiologists. All screenings are scheduled by appointment, so there is no downtime waiting. The entire process typically takes less than one hour to complete.
SCA does not discriminate -- whether an athlete, in the marching band, a member of the chess club, or a video gamer -- and your children could be at risk of experiencing this deadly event. Since 2015, Deborah has screened more than 1,000 students, and found approximately 5% needed additional follow-up and assessment by a Pediatric Cardiologist.
Please distribute the enclosed flyer to every student, coach, and teacher at your school. We’d also appreciate if you could “email blast” it to all parents or guardians of your students, the PTA and your local community leaders. And please remind your parents that although the event is free of charge online pre-registration is required to reserve a spot.
This is truly a life-saving event, and we at Deborah are proud to be able to offer it to the community. Do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.

Project Dress Up
I wanted to let you know about a charity that was developed 6 years in Burlington County at Oaks Integrated Care. A colleague and I founded Project Dress Up with the purpose of helping teens and tweens. The goal was to help those in need feel special and important and also to give some financial relief to them and possibly their parents when it comes to dress shopping for their prom or a special dance or event (graduation), which we know can be pricey!
We have a shop that is open 2 days a year, this year in April, and fill it to the brim with formal dresses long and short of all sizes and shoes and jewelry for the teens and tweens. They can come shop to find that dress for their graduation, their prom, their dance, etc... We pride ourselves on transforming this space to truly feel like a dress shop.
We strive to create a very positive, fun, supportive environment for them to shop and want them to have a great experience. There are no qualifications to be able to shop other then to be a teen or tween in need of a formal dress. Please look to the Teen flyer for the shop hours and days, and it is first come first serve.
Please help us spread the word about the Project Dress Up Shop in your school! Post the flyer, share the flyer on social media, and feel free to email the flyer to other colleagues in other schools or community resources.

How to begin:
- Start Reading!

Attention parents of preschool children
Does your child have difficulty in one or more of the following areas:
Hearing - Seeing - Talking - Listening - Sitting - Standing - Walking - Running - Feeding One Self
Toilet Training - Socializing
The school district offers FREE PROGRAMS to preschool handicapped children. To be eligible a child must be 3-5 years old and qualify for services. Children under 3 may be served by early intervention programs. We believe the sooner a child's special needs can be determined, the better that child's chances to receive an appropriate education and develop his/her potential.
