A Note from the Principal's Office
September 30, 2018
Dear PES Families,
Happy Fall! We had a tremendous response to last week's Pajama Day benefit for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month with over $800 being raised. Thank you to all our families for your generosity. We also had a number of students made Get Well cards for children battling cancer. These thoughtful notes demonstrate the caring of our students. Thank you!
- Safety Drills are required by the Illinois State Board of Education and are an important part of training our students and staff in case of an emergency. These drills also help us identify areas of improvement and efficiency as we work to keep everyone safe. The following drills are required: Bus Evacuation, Earthquake, Hard Lockdown/Intruder, and 3 Fire Drills. At PES, we will begin these drills this month. Please talk to your child about the drills and remind them of the importance of staying calm and listening to the adults' directions. Once confirmed with the Willow Springs Police Department, I will share the date of the Hard Lockdown with families. While our students have performed well in the past, this is the drill that seems to create more concern for students and families.
- The October PTO Meeting is this Tuesday night at 7pm. Please join us in the Board Room at the Admin Center to learn about what the PTO is doing and how you can get involved. Be sure to mark your calendar for October 19th for the PTOs Halloween Hop. More information about this fun event will be shared by the PTO.
- MAP Testing has completed and copies of student reports will be sent home Friday, October 5th. 4th graders will also receive their 2018 PARCC results.
- White Buffalo Playground construction continues! We are anxious for this project to be completed and appreciate the work of the Park District to create an interactive play area for children.
- Morning Arrival/Supervision begins at 8:40am. Over the past two weeks, we have had some students arriving much earlier than this supervised time. For your child's safety, please do not drop off students before 8:40am. We realize that family schedules may necessitate an earlier drop-off and ask that families contact the Pleasant Dale Park District for enrollment in Extra Innings. Children can participate in Extra Innings as needed though arrangements need to be coordinated through the Park District.
- Fall Data Review Meetings are in progress. During these meetings, grade level teachers, administrators, and Specialists come together to analyze student assessment data and identify support needed for individual students. Additionally, we look at grade level data and identify areas where we may need to adjust our Tier 1 instruction. Tier 1 instruction is our grade level curriculum taught to all students. When large groups of students have learning gaps in an area (eg. measurement), we look to modify our Tier 1 instruction. When individual students have specific needs, we consider additional interventions (Tier 2 and/or Tier 3 instruction). This tiered approach to instruction ensures we are meeting the needs of all students and providing instruction to help all children grow. Classroom teachers will be reaching out to parents of students identified for additional support. As always, please contact your child's teacher if you have questions or concerns about your child's learning.
For our students,
Ms. Tomei
PTO Write Stuff
This year we are up and running with the PTOs Write Stuff. This program is available to all students. Students submit their writing on a given topic and selected pieces are read during a lunch period. Here are our 3rd and 4th-grade writers who were selected to have their piece read aloud.
Writer's Workshop
First Graders learn that writers revise their work by rereading and making sure it sounds like a book. Through the Lucy Calkins' Units of Study resource, our teachers are providing students direct instruction and daily practice in writing.
Science Explorations
4th graders learn about weathering through experimentation with sugar cubes. Hands-on learning like this help us reach our Strategic Blueprint Qualities of a Pleasantdale Graduate: Communicator, Problem Solver, Global Citizen, and Individual.
Our Mission: To create a community of inspired learners

Reminders:
- All visitors to PES will be required to provide a State-issued ID in order to gain access to our school. Please make sure you have your ID with you before coming to the school.
- All of School Street is a School Zone which means that all cell phone use is prohibited. This includes hands-free devices.
- Morning Arrival Supervision begins at 8:40am. All students are expected to be at school and in the building by 9am. It is important for students to be on time each day. This sets them up for a successful day. We kindly ask families to adjust morning routines if their child is regularly arriving tardy to school.
