Trex Plastic Film Recycling Challenge Update
Thank you to everyone who has donated recyclables to the Trex Plastic Film Recycling Challenge! For the month of January, we collected 92 lbs. of plastic wrap -- our largest haul yet! We are making excellent progress while keeping plastic out of our homes, the environment, and landfills.
As a reminder, please do not include any plastic containers or food items in the Trex recycling bin. Acceptable plastic wrap should be clean and dry and labeled with recycling logo 2 or 4 or have a plastic wrap logo. Pet food bags, floral wrap, and candy bags are unfortunately not eligible for this program. Kindly remove receipts and cut out shipping labels and stickers prior to recycling, as they will disrupt the sorting machines.
The campaign ends on April 15th, so please continue to drop off your recyclables in the Trex bin located in the Aspen courtyard. Thank you for your support!
2022-2023 Opt-In Communication for CVUSD Advisory Council/Committee Updates
In CVUSD, parent/guardian engagement and participation is a top priority! Participation is encouraged through many organizations and activities. Several CVUSD Advisory Councils/Committees that support parent/guardian participation are listed below, with the OPTION for you to select any or all to receive communications from the school’s identified parent/guardian representative and/or from school site administration. This communication would provide information and updates to you related to the Advisory Council/Committee meetings. Please select the Council(s)/Committee(s) that you would like to receive information and updates on, approximately monthly. If you have students at multiple school sites, please submit the form for each school. Additionally, if you opted-in last year, please plan to do so annually. Importantly, should you choose to opt-in to receiving these updates, the parent/guardian representative for the Advisory Council(s)/Committees(s) and/or the administration will not share your email address with others. You also have the ability to opt-out at any time in the event you no longer wish to receive the Advisory Council/Committee information.
If you have any questions in this regard, please contact Dr. Craven at scraven@conejousd.org.
To access the Advisory Council/Committee Opt-In Form, please use this LINK.

Family Reading Night
We’re excited to invite you to Aspen’s annual Family Reading Night which will take place on Friday 03/03/23 between 5.30-6.30 in the MPR. We will have exciting guests that will be reading from books of their selection. We will have cookies, popcorn, a raffle, and several interesting vendors. As always, the kids can dress in pajamas and bring blankets and pillows so that everybody can get cozy and comfortable during the reading. Also please bring your chairs or blankets to sit on.
This year, we will also hold a Book Exchange event as part of our Family Reading Night. We hope that every child can go home with a new book to read. For each attending child, please bring between 1-3 used children’s books that your child would like to exchange. Any leftover books will be donated to the Friends of the Thousand Oaks Library non-profit organization.
We could still use a couple of volunteers to help us decorate the MPR and run the evening. If you’d like to help, please reach out to Kamila Schmirlerova at kamilaschmirler@hotmail.com. We’re looking forward to seeing you on March 3rd!

CALLING ALL SCIENTISTS!!!
Science Fair Information Packets and Sign-Ups will be sent home next week! Your students will have two weeks to decide on an experiment idea and turn in their "Proposal" sheet (along with $5 for their science display board). The due date for proposals is Friday, March 10th. Keep in mind, science projects can be done individually or with a group. Once we review your child's proposal, to ensure it is safe and appropriate for elementary school, your child will receive a "Student Preparation Guide". This guide will include all the necessary information and resources to help your child complete their project successfully!
Come one, come all! Even if your child doesn't plan to enter a project, we strongly encourage you to attend the event. So please put this date on your calendars! The Aspen Science Fair will be held on Wednesday, April 19th from 5-7 p.m.. There will be hands-on STEM stations for students to explore and create as well as demonstrations and interactive experiments hosted by the Cal Lutheran Science Department. In addition, we will be selling Archaeological Excavation Eggs (Gems & Fossils) and a Make-Your-Own-Mad-Scientist Party Punch. The proceeds will be used to benefit and enhance Aspen's science curriculum.
So get your lab coats out and your thinking hats on and let's have some fun! We can't wait to see what creative project ideas our Aspen kids come up with this year!
