Calico Cottage
December 2022
Happenings at Calico Cottage!
To start my newsletter this month I get to share some Special News. Randy & I were blessed with a granddaughter on October 22nd. Jacie (my daughter), her husband Eric and my grandson Elam welcomed a special gift from heaven named Harlynn Charlie Milius to our family. She is just perfect in every way and our hearts are exploding with love!
A special Thank-you to all my customers (friends) who voted for Calico Cottage for Hastings Downtown Business of the Year. We received an amazing number of votes and won the title for this year. Thank-you, Thank-you and Thank-you again, your support means so much to us!
Oh, my... in the blink of an eye, we are deep into the holiday season. I always look forward to the winter season, the cooler weather, the beautiful Christmas lights, special time with family and friends and my life moving at little bit slower pace with more time to start new projects or even finish up on some of my UFO's that I have stashed away. I've been doing some serious planning for what winter and the new year holds here at Calico Cottage.
- Join us any Thursday evening anytime from 5 PM to 9 PM for "Girls Night Out", bring something to work on. Someone is always on site to offer assistance if you need some extra help or advice. We will have great conversation and maybe get some projects done.
- Illusions BOM club continues to meet on the first Friday of each month.
- Happy Hour is scheduled for December 9th! Julie will be on Facebook live Friday night December 9th for Happy Hour at 5:00 PM, to show you what is new at Calico Cottage.
- M.E. (Machine Embroidery) Club is December 12th from 6:30 PM until 8:30 PM
- Remember the 25th of the month is "12 Months of Christmas" = free Christmas projects.
- Sew....It's Friday, happens on December 30th join us for a "free day of sewing".
- Quilts of Valor Sew day is January 18th from 9:30 AM until 2:30 PM
- Exploring Embroidery is resuming on January 19th from 7 to 9 PM

Getting to know Us!
By now most of you have had the opportunity to stop in and meet Julie and the staff at Calico Cottage. During the next few months, we will be featuring an employee so you get to know us just a bit better. Next up is Carla Hubl!
Carla says: She has been married to Dennis Hubl for 42 years. Together they have three grown sons, two of which live in the area so they can spoil the grandkids. Their children are:
- Drew, his wife Megan and seven year old daughter, Myla
- Shane, his wife Brandi and children, five year old daughter Charli and nearly three year old son Ben
- And youngest son, Dylan, a wildlife biologist in Seattle, WA.
Carla says “I learned to sew from my mother who was an accomplished seamstress and leader of our 4-H group for many years. I enjoy a wide variety of sewing, machine embroidery and crafts. I have been involved in Quilts of Valor and have been thrilled to learn how to use the long arm to quilt.”
She retired from nursing a year ago and is still adjusting to that. Carla started at Calico Cottage during the first of this year, usually working just one day a week. Carla says she has enjoyed getting to know her co-workers and meeting the customers.
Here are a few questions we asked Carla to get to know her just a bit better.
- Favorite season: I love warm, even hot weather… spring after the last of winter moves out. Love seeing the new crops growing in the fields and planting new flowers.
- Morning/Night owl: I adapt to either, depends on what I’m doing or have planned.
- Childhood dreams: I didn’t have just one single childhood dream. I changed my mind a lot growing up which explains why I was going back to school to get a nursing degree after I was married and had three young sons.
- Inspiration: My parents. My mother because I watched her go through so many health challenges but still defied the odds and lived to be nearly ninety. And my father because he had such a great work ethic and was so family oriented.
- Favorite food: Anything Italian or Mexican, or chocolate!
- Best Vacation: visiting Hawaii with my husband and youngest son, staying with some relatives so we got some “backstage tours” of things the normal tourist doesn’t get to see. But my favorite time off now is spent at our cabin at Lovewell.
- Words to live by: All I Really Need To Know I Learned in Kindergarten.
- Favorite Notions: Can’t live without my rotary cutter/mat.
