Riding the Wave of Excellence!

September 11, 2022

Dear Families,

In the spirit of remembrance, of the September 11 attacks, I share this quote from our Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA)

DoDEA acknowledges -- with profound gratitude and appreciation--all the brave, selfless heroes that tirelessly defend our freedom and make the great American educational experience possible.

SMILE!

Mission Elementary is a Community School

The Vision to Learn Eye Screening was a big success! Thank you to all families, teachers, and students for your participation. We went classroom to classroom, screening each student who had not opted-out. After screening our entire school, 137 students (31% of our school) qualify for the full eye exam when Vision to Learn brings its Mobile Optometrist unit onto campus (starting Sept. 23). All students who participate in the eye exam will be given a free pair of prescription glasses with a year's replacement guarantee. They will be able to select their own frame at their eye exam for personal style.

Family Engagement Opportunity: We are pleased to be able to offer three series of the Parenting the Love & Logic Way workshops this fall. Please see the attached flyers for more detailed information.

School Site Council

How can you get involved in making decisions that continue to make Mission a safe, fun, and engaging environment? Join our School Site Council. We have 3 openings and we meet about once a month with other Mission parents and staff members to learn about our site's plans geared to help excel in student achievement and thrive through academic and social-emotional support. Please complete this form if you are interested in joining our School Site Council.

English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC)

I also invite parents of Multilingual Learners to join our English Learner Meetings (ELAC). Our first meeting is scheduled for September 14 from 6:00-7:00pm in our MPR. As you can see, there are many ways parents/guardians can get involved at our school!

Technology Corner

Chrome Device Protection Plan extended until September 30: Consider purchasing this optional insurance for your scholar's device. OUSD has made this support a much more efficient process and it is less costly than paying for an entire device.

OUSD has an app! Stay connected and informed by downloading OUSD's free app on your phone.

COVID Update

The County of San Diego has revised their COVID-19 guidance for schools to align with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) K-12 Guidance and the San Diego County Public Health Order. The revision removes the requirement to provide notification to students who may have been exposed to individuals infected with COVID-19 while at school. Beginning September 6, OUSD schools will no longer be sending notification letters to students who may have been exposed, or maintaining the COVID-19 dashboard on the website. Staff close contacts will continue to be notified per CAL-OHSA. We continue to encourage students and staff to monitor their symptoms, and testing for COVID-19 is recommended for those experiencing symptoms, or who have been a close contact of an individual with COVID-19.

COVID Testing Locations

OUSD partners with the American Safety Group to offer public COVID-19 testing at no cost. Beginning September 6, the COVID-19 testing site that will be open is located in the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Parking Lot at 2080 Mission Avenue from 9:00 am.-4:00 pm. All other testing locations will be closed.

Nutrition Services

School Meals: All meals will continue to be offered at no cost to all scholars. This year, however, students will learn and use their lunch number for accountability purposes.
