What You Do Matters: A Word of Encouragement for Dos
Piles of grading. Irate parents. Disrespectful, disinterested students. Constant testing and continuous requirements. These, and many more things, conspire against teachers and try to bring you down. They can discourage you. They can make you wonder if you are wasting your time.
And today I want to offer you a small word of encouragement. – You are NOT wasting your time. What you’re doing DOES matter. Your labor is not in vain.
Staff, Your Work Matters!
I am going to tell you that there are students in your class who will look back on this year and be thankful for your influence. They may even be the one causing you the most trouble. I am going to remind you that growth takes time and tell you that the seeds you are planting in young hearts and minds will grow and bring forth fruit, even if you might not see it yet. I am going to tell you that you are making a difference. That there are students who care; who are grateful; who are learning; who are growing... Even if they never tell you.
WE see your effort, your work, your labor.
We see the long hours and the shed tears. We know your frustrations. We don't try to overlook you. And we don't take you for granted. We know you put so much thought & effort into doing your best for our students. Into being the best teacher you can be for their sake.
When no one else seems to notice, we see.
When no one else seems to care, we care.
When your words seem to be falling flat, we see your effort.
If we’re doing it for them...
So this week back, in the midst of busyness, frustration, chaos – take a moment and remember the real reason that you are teaching. It shouldn’t be for the praise. And we know it's not for the money.
The real reason we are teaching is for the students and a higher purpose.
And if we keep our focus on that and them, it doesn’t matter as much what’s happening around us. Therefore, our Dos Staff, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding... knowing that your labor is not in vain.
So don’t give up. Don’t quit.
Be encouraged.
And keep making a difference.
Mrs. Annamarie Dowling-Garrott
Please be encouraged... "It works if you work it."
