RAISE Goal: to take pride in my book work
Te reo phrase of the week: huri mai (turn this way)
Kia ora,
Despite the inclement weather we had a wonderful day yesterday, filled with community spirit and a great hangi meal enjoyed by over 300 people. Events of this nature do not come together without fantastic preparation and organisation. A huge thanks to both Alfred and Anna Hauparoa for their hard work and expertise in providing this experience for our students and whanau. A big thanks also must go to the parents/caregivers who helped prepare the food on Wednesday and put the hangi down on Thursday.
Monday 27th February - 1 pm Finish
School will finish at 1pm on Monday 27th February due to a teachers’ paid union meeting taking place in Hawera at 1:30 pm. Unfortunately we do not have enough staff to cover the teachers that we need to release for the meeting. Luckily with our athletics event now taking place on Monday at 10:20 am, parents/caregivers will be able to take their children home afterwards. The first school bus run will leave at approximately 1:05 pm.
Kaponga Athletics
We are thoroughly looking forward to the Kaponga Athletics event next Thursday. Can you please return the permission slip ASAP so we can have definite numbers on which students will need transport on the day. Can I please ask our parents/caregivers to remember that this is a school event, therefore your child/ren need to be sitting with the school at all times. The playground is out of bounds to all of our students. We appreciate your support with this as it makes things extremely hard when we have to try and find students for events who are not sitting with the school.
Kia pai to wiki (have a wonderful weekend).

Enrolment Notice (out of zone)
Enrolment at Matapu School is governed by an enrolment scheme, details of which are available from our school office.
The board has determined that there are likely to be up to nine places available (seven at new entrant and two at year two) for out-of-zone students in Term 2 this year. The exact number of places will depend on the number of applications received from students who live within the school’s home zone. The deadline for out-of-zone applications is 3pm 3rd March.
Applications can be made by visiting the school office and applying in writing.
We encourage all families (both in-zone and out-of-zone) who intend on enrolling their children at Matapu School in 2023 or 2024 to please let us know by either contacting the school office on (06) 272 6764 or emailing admin@matapu.school.nz.
If the number of out of zone applications exceeds the number of places available, students will be selected by ballot. If a ballot for out-of-zone places is required, it will be held on Tuesday 7th March. Parents will be informed of the outcome of the ballot within three school days of the ballot being held.

Room 1
This week our senior class has spent a significant amount of time preparing for our Hangi. Our boys did some hard mahi digging, dismantling pellets and arriving super early to get the fire started, while our wahine did a great job helping to prepare the vegetables. We want to say a huge thank you to the whānau who helped us along the way. Your efforts were hugely appreciated.
Room 2
It is a great week when 27 children are busy peeling potatoes! The school hangi was a fantastic event, which afforded the children the opportunity to get involved and show their skills at peeling! I am sure at home, these same children will be so keen to help in the kitchen now...
We also learnt heaps from the swimming coach Brooke. It is encouraging to see that our Matapu children have well developed water safety skills and most of them demonstrate confidence in the water and can all hold their breath under the water as well as dive and retrieve objects from the pool floor.
Room 2 is very focussed on learning basic facts. For the last couple of weeks we have been learning our times and divided by 2. Lots of variety in our classroom this week, lots of happy children eager to learn.
Room 3
Wow! What a busy week it has been. Lots of good and different opportunities for our Room 3 tamariki this week.
We have enjoyed learning about the seed cycle and doing seed art. This is a science work in progress and I look forward to displaying this later in the term. We have also had some good learnings from Brooke.
Students have enjoyed learning about the Hangi. The science and process behind this and the korero while peeling the spuds was pretty cool. Spud peelings everywhere. For some students it was the first spud they had peeled. (They can tick that off their life skills learnt at Matapu. Paki paki to them I say) Thank you to Mrs Parry and Room 1 and 2 helpers. You were amazing.
Everyone enjoyed watching and learning about the hangi process being carried out in 'real life' terms, and then all coming together with whanau for the big feed out. So cool to see everyone coming together again for these sorts of events….Lots to celebrate this week. Thank you again.
Room 3.
Room 4
Room 5
Room 5 loved making the stuffing for the hangi on Wednesday. We got to crumb the bread and mix all the ingredients together to make a delicious stuffing. It was an awesome opportunity to talk about a hangi and know what was happening on the back field when the food went in at 9am on Thursday. Thanks to Mrs Hauparoa for organising this event.
Room 6
It has been an eventful week.
On Tuesday, Brooke came to give us tips for staying safe in the water and we learnt how to crawl along the pool like monkeys. Wednesday saw Room 6 turned into a kitchen making stuffing as our part of the hangi preparation. We had lots of fun with a bit of sampling along the way!
Somewhere along the way Amber and Chloe helped clean and prepare the playhouse and outdoor kitchen ready for use and everyone was excited to give it a go. It has been popular at break times!
Everyone will need a good sleep and catch up over the weekend to refresh them for more excitement next week.
