High School Attendance Presentation
Audra Christenson, principal for North High School
Jim Richter, principal at East High School
Using data reported on the Illinois School Report card, administrators from both high schools began researching the reasons why a large percentage of our students were marked as chronically absent.
The definition of chronic absenteeism is, “any student who is absent from school (not receiving instruction) for 10% of more school days in a school year, for any reason.”
High school leaders conducted focus groups with students and parents at both schools to gauge their knowledge of what chronic absenteeism is, understand what they view as an acceptable reason for absences, and learn what motivates students to attend school. Based on the responses that can be viewed in the PowerPoint presentation, the schools have created some steps to combat chronic absenteeism.
Seal of Biliteracy
Since St. Charles CUSD 303 began offering the Seal of Biliteracy
- 126 students have earned the Seal of Biliteracy
- 162 have earned the State Commendation toward Biliteracy.
Students who earn the Seal Biliteracy receive official seals on their diplomas and transcripts, which indicates to employers and college admissions that they can read, speak, listen, and write in English and another language.
Additionally, by law, Illinois public universities will accept the State Seal of Biliteracy as equivalent to 2 years of world language coursework taken during high school. In addition, many universities waive any world language requirements and/or grant course credit. Additional information and the necessary forms can be found on St. Charles East and St. Charles North websites under the Academics tab.

Citizen Advisory Committee
Members spent time reflecting on questions they had related to the new elementary school day. Staff members for the Learning and Teaching Department were on hand to provide clarity.
At the February meeting, the Executive Team reviewed a draft agenda that will be used in subsequent meetings that will include:
- Learning and connecting the why
- Guiding questions from the Board
- Engagement or activity
There will also be time for reflections and feedback from the CAC members. Future agenda items include:

Food Service Vendors
The District is beginning to work on renewals with both food vendors since we have heard positive feedback from all stakeholders.
The cost of labor continues to rise and we will be making a recommendation to the Board to increase meals at K-8 from $2.50 to $2.90, which will put District 303 in the median price range of surrounding districts. The last time the meal rate increased was in 2016.
