From Superintendent Tucci Osorio

Dear 622 Families,

We continue to monitor our local COVID data for Ramsey County, Washington County, and our school district. As you know, over the past several weeks, we have seen a dramatic uptick in positive COVID cases in our community and around the state. We also see the number of cases and close contacts increase within the district, as shown on our District 622 COVID Dashboard.

Unfortunately, due to the increase in cases, we now need to shift our preschool and elementary students to full-time distance learning. We know that our schools have been a relatively safe place for students to be; however, we see a dramatic increase in COVID cases from the community now spilling into our schools. Large numbers of staff and students are required to quarantine at home, whether testing positive themselves, or because they have been identified as close contacts of other positive cases. With this, we have been increasingly short-staffed throughout our district. Please see the presentation that was shared with our school board at the November 10 study session.

With this announcement, here is some important information specific to different 622 programs:

Elementary School (K-5)
No school on Monday, November 23, and Tuesday, November 24, for staff planning.
Full-time Distance Learning begins on Monday, November 30, at least through December.

Middle School and High School (6-12)
Students in grades 6-12 students will still have class on Monday, November 23, and Tuesday, November 24. Secondary Distance Learning will continue at least through December.

Adventure Connection
Will be closed on Monday, November 23, and Tuesday, November 24. Childcare services will resume on Monday, November 30.

Preschool
Conferences will be held on Monday, November 23, and Tuesday, November 24.
No school on Monday, November 30, and Tuesday, December 1, for staff planning.
Distance Learning begins on Wednesday, December 2, at least through December.

Early Childhood Special Education
Will continue with select programming. Any changes will be communicated separately.

Harmony K-12
Will continue with current programming. Any changes will be communicated separately.

Next Step Transition
Will continue with current programming. Any changes will be communicated separately.

This is not news that I want to share with you, but it is our unfortunate reality. We hoped to increase student time in schools, not the opposite. I am hopeful that if we work together as a community, we can reduce COVID spread and eventually bring all of our students back to school, where they belong.

We understand the need for families to be able to plan ahead, so the goal will be to share another COVID projection with you, along with the next steps for January, by December 18. For now, please look for a separate communication from your child’s principal regarding updates to the daily schedule for Distance Learning.

Sincerely,

Christine Tucci Osorio
