This week we are learning about:
Reading:
A cute reminder for the kids is to think about P.I.E. when they are determining the author's purpose.
P=Persuade
I=Inform
E=Entertain
We are reading a variety of books and articles to determine the author's purpose. We will be reviewing on Thursday and enjoying a P.I.E made in class :)
Our standard focus this week:
Identify the main purpose of a text, including what the author wants to answer, explain, or describe.
The test will be: Friday, November 21st.
Math
For example,
Mrs. Gaston bought some cards at Wal-Mart on Monday. Asher gave her 45 more cards on Thursday. If Mrs. Gaston now was 67 cards, how many did she buy at Wal-Mart?
(The start is unknown. Some students will look at this and say X+45=67 others may think 67 is the whole and I know if I take away the part I know this will give me what I don't know, 67-45=____. )
An example of the unknown in the middle.
Jarvion went to Toys R Us to do some Christmas shopping. He had 35 dollars in his wallet when he walked into the store. If he has 12 dollars left after shopping, how much money did he spend? (Again, some students will think 35-X=12, they may start at 35 and see how many jumps it will take to get back to 12. Others may think 35 take away what he has left will tell me what he spent 35-12=____. It doesn't matter which way they think about the problem as long as they choose a strategy that they are consistent with and that helps them get to the right answer.
Our standard focus for this week:
OA1- One step word problems with unknowns in all positions.
Our test will be on Friday, November 21st.
Science & Writing
This week we are creating our own experiments and writing lab reports about them.
We will have a gallery walk Friday, November 21st to display our experiments.
We would love for you to come in. Our gallery will be from 12:20-1 on Friday.
