Northside Elementary School
Dear District 228 Families:
The Comprehensive Health Education Act, often referred to as Erin’s Law, was signed into law by Governor Pat Quinn. This law requires all public schools to implement an age-appropriate sexual abuse awareness and prevention curriculum for all students in grades PreK-12 and to provide training on sexual abuse prevention for all staff.
District 228 Social Workers and School Psychologists will be providing age-appropriate lessons on personal safety to all students in PreK-5th grade this year. Student lessons will begin in February and will incorporate concepts and skills that are developmentally appropriate based upon grade levels.
Lessons are adapted from the Second Step Committee for Children, Child Protection Unit that focuses on teaching students basic skills to help keep them safe from abusive or dangerous situations. Some concepts discussed during presentations will include:
- Personal Safety. Students will learn important safety rules, such as safety with guns, sharp tools, and fire, and bike and car safety. They will also learn ways to help them decide if something is safe or not.
- Touching Safety. Students will learn about safe, unsafe, and unwanted touches, and rules about touching private body parts. They’ll also learn to say no to unsafe or unwanted touches, and to tell an adult if someone breaks rules about touching private body parts.
- Assertiveness. These lessons will also give students a chance to practice asking an adult for help, telling an adult about an unsafe situation, and being assertive to get out of unsafe situations.
More information on lessons can be found by going to www.secondstep.org and using the following family access codes.

Reading and fostering the love of reading can have a significant impact on your child's ability to read. Studies have shown that students who read for enjoyment is an accurate predictor of reading ability. Continue to foster the love of reading. You might have heard, but the new playground is a big hit! We are still waiting on the monkey bars, but the rest of the playground is full go. Our students are truly enjoying the new equipment. A big thank you to our wonderful PTA for their generous donation of the playground.
