St. Dominic School 2020-2021
Principal's Message
Dear St. Dominic Families,
Is it just me or has this school year really flown by? It's hard to believe we have completed 8 full months of school.
May is jam packed with activities. I'm excited about one recently added event for parents. I'm sure you'll agree that the last year has been stressful for everyone. I've asked school parent and professor of social work, Monica Ascar, to facilitate a conversation about how to take care of ourselves post-pandemic. This is an evening, in person event for parents. Look for the RSVP below. I hope you can join me for an important moment of reflection and guidance.
Before you know it, we'll be in the first week of June and the school year will be over. There are so many events in the last week, so I've provided descriptions for each day:
Tuesday, June 1 - Field Day. Students will compete in a variety of events on teams with 8th grade captains. Miss Kennedy plans the events. At 11:15, parents are invited to join their children for a picnic lunch.
Wednesday, June 2 - Students in grades K - 7 will visit the classroom they will be in next year for Move Up Day. This gives them a chance to meet the teachers and learn about summer reading or math requirements. They will also pack up their materials, clean the classroom, and enjoy their last full day of school together. The 8th grade students have a special morning together and have graduation that night.
Thursday, June 3 - Students will gather for a morning prayer service outside, then return to their classrooms. We will begin our Honors Assembly at 9:30 and it will go until 11 a.m. Students will then return to their classrooms and be dismissed from there at 11:15.
The saint we are learning about this month is St. Teresa of Calcutta, whose call to serve the poor led her to the most impoverished slums of India. One of her most famous quotes is, "Peace begins with a smile." I hope that our students have felt peace this school year, knowing that the staff of St. Dominic School cares for them and, even more importantly, that God loves them. As we finish out the 2020-2021 school year, our theme seems more relevant than ever -- Smile! Jesus loves you!
God bless you,
Mrs. Covington

Tomorrow's Leaders Start Here
Teachers, parents, and fellow students are encouraged to identify students who lead in worshipping, learning, serving, and connecting. These are students who go above and beyond by giving of their time, recognizing a need, and putting others ahead of themselves.
Learning Leader
A parent volunteering as a choreographer recognized 7th grader Sidney Evans as a learning leader for her dedication to learning their St. Dominic Show dance as a new student to the school.

Mrs. Covington recognized Gavin Hurley and Stella Price for their 2nd place finish in the Alpha Jump Shark Tank competition. Their product is “Pocket Packers”, a lunch box that simultaneously keeps food hot or cold.

Connecting Leader
Mrs. Marusic recognized Maya Hillmon in her class as a connecting leader for taking the time to welcome a student back to the classroom, showing her around, teaching her the routines, and helping her feel comfortable.
Learning Leaders
Mrs. Marusic recognized JAC Currid and Owen Rinker for being learning leaders in 3rd grade. She says that they often arrive early and have already finished their morning work by the time the other students arrive. Instead of distracting others or just sitting there, they ask for more work to practice their skills and cheerfully and diligently complete it.
Important Messages From the FEA
Mark your calendars for the St. Dominic Show Parent Performance Day on Wednesday, May 26. We are still working on a schedule, but the performances for K - 5 will be in the morning and 6 & 7 will be after 12:45. After your child's class performs, you are welcome to join Mrs. Covington for some beverages and snacks as well as visit the art show. The schedule of performances will go home soon.
At the May 17 meeting, all members will vote on the slate for next year's FEA Board. The current vice president, Kamille Madison, will be at the top of the ticket as president. A few names have been shared for potential board positions. If you are interested or know someone who you think might make a good vice president, treasurer, or secretary, please send the names to the nominating committee:
Julie Currid at jkcurrid@gmail.com
Angela Tuggle at angelatuggle@gmail.com
Be on the lookout for lots of fun summer family get togethers planned by the FEA.
Bulldog Club News
Spring sports are in full swing. In addition to the traditional track program, we now offer both tennis and girls lacrosse. Flag football is also holding their season since it was cancelled in the fall.
COVID safety protocols are in place, and the kids are having a great time learning from their coaches.
Thank you to everyone who has helped make sports available this school year by volunteering as coaches, managing team schedules, and making sure your athletes are healthy and ready to play. The Bulldog Club is looking forward to a more normal 21-22 athletic year.
