Dear Hillcrest Parents & Guardians,

All Huskies will be focusing on Habit #6 (Synergy) for the month of February and participating in the Kindness Challenge. Our 3rd -6th graders will be focusing on AVID Instructional Strategy- Note Taking. Lastly, ASB students will be selling Valentine Grams and our English Language Learners will be taking the ELPAC tests.

Have a Reluctant reader at home? Here are a few tips you can try to help engage them in this lifelong skill. Discuss and find topics of interests they enjoy. Be a role model at home, model reading for them, share why you chose to read and how you choose what to read. Try activities: pair reading, read a sentence or paragraph taking turns. Look for shorter books, use technology tools that may have different graphics or even read to them with voice over, audio books. Please encourage your child to pick up a book for 15 minutes instead of 15 minutes of screen time once a day. The best intervention is just practice reading. What is AVID?

AVID Elementary supports AVID’s mission to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. AVID stands for, Advancement Via Individual Determination.

AVID Elementary focuses on grades 3 through 6 and is designed to be embedded into the daily instruction of classrooms across entire grade levels to maintain school wide structures and organization.

AVID Elementary's implementation resources, trainings, and philosophy are all grounded in the idea that the growth mindset can be taught to students, and it is through the growth mindset that AVID students succeed in following their dreams and fulfilling their aspirations.

AVID Elementary takes a systemic approach through the use of WICOR and an explicit focus on high expectations, rigor, and developing a college readiness culture.
