Silver City Families,
Checkmate! You're still winning and your child is too when it comes to learning reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. Continue to stay the course with us! Is your child online every day? Does your child complete and turn in his/her BEST work? Does your child ask for help? Have you picked up your child's supplies for the new quarter? Have you set up the Parent Portal so that you can see what assignments have been graded or are missing?
We all can continue to win, but we need you! As we begin 2021, set a goal (or two, three..) and put that goal in your mind and see yourself achieving it. Now, help your child to do the same.
December Celebrations:
- Approximately 50% of our parents have completed the Parent Portal before the January 13th deadline. Great job Parents! If you have not set up the Parent Portal, you need to in order that you can access your child's 2nd Quarter grades. Give us a call if you need help!
- Our staff is amazing! We had an opportunity to celebrate all of their hard work by providing lunch for them as well as a self-care bag before they began their Winter Break. Some of them even won a prize! We know that teaching in a pandemic isn't easy so we want to honor them for all of their hard work.
Parent Portal is NOT an option
- Set up your Parent Portal by Jan 13th because this will be the way you will receive your child's grades for the remaining of the school year.
Meal Sites
- Even though we are no longer a meal site, you can still pick up meals from the following schools 11:00-2:00pm daily: Banneker, Claude Huyck, Douglass, John Fiske, Lowell Brune, Mark Twain, M.E. Pearson, New Chelsea, Stony Point South, Welborn, Central, Carl Bruce, Gloria Willis, Rosedale, Harmon, Schlagle, and Washington
- Additional assistance for food resources are listed in this newsletter.
Very Important Parent
- Stay tuned for our V.I.P. Awards!
FastBridge Assessment
Your child (K-5) will be taking an assessment that is new to them (and you) called FastBridge at the end of January. It will test your child in Reading and Math. Your child will be required to stay on Zoom with his/her teacher the entire time the test is being given with "cameras on". We really want your child to do his/her best so finding a quiet place for your child to complete the test is important. Your child's teacher will let you know the day and time of the test. A username and password will be given and instructions on how to access the test will be shared with you by the teacher.
FastBridge will identify all students who need additional help to meet this year’s student learning goals. To help us know which students might need additional support, students will complete screening tests up to three times each year. These tests help teachers see which students are likely to meet the end of year learning goals, and which ones need more help.
Our district will use the following FastBridge Learning® assessments to screen students remotely:
- AutoReading aMath
- aReading CBMmath Automaticity
The teachers look at the screening scores immediately after the testing and compare their students’ scores with other information about school performance. Those students whose scores are low across different tests are provided with additional support to help them meet the learning goals.
All of the students who participate in extra instruction also take regular progress tests to see if their skills are getting better. These tests are given weekly to monthly, depending on the student’s learning needs. Both screening and progress monitoring score reports are shared with parents during parent-teacher conferences or at other times during the school year. These reports help the teacher, student, and parents know if each student is likely to meet this year’s learning goals.
If your child has a low score on a screening test, and other information shows that the student needs extra help in that area, extra instruction will be given automatically during the daily school schedule. Your child’s progress will be shared with you by his or her teacher. If you have questions about your child’s school performance, screening scores, or progress monitoring results, please contact your child’s teacher. We look forward to working with your child and you during this school year.
How to Teach Your Child How to Become a Mentor

- What Do You Do With an Idea? - by Kobi Yamada - Do you have a shy child at home? This book would be a perfect match! It's the sweetest story about a child whose idea grows as he grows more confident.
Wish - by Barbara O'Connor - This book is about a little girl's wish that she's been wanting to come true since 4th grade. Will she ever get it? She quickly discovers that what she thought she wanted may not be what she needs at all.
Bunheads by Misty Copeland - Have you heard of Misty Copeland? She's actually from Kansas who has become one of the most accomplished ballet dancers. This book tells how she came to love ballet. It's a great story of a little girl's dream that really came true.
