Safer, Smarter Kids
Last spring, the Andover USD 385 Board of Education approved the purchase of a new elementary school counseling program called Safer, Smarter Kids to support our counselors in addressing the Kansas Social, Emotional, and Character Model Standards. This curriculum was created by educators, developmental psychologists, and experts in abuse prevention to teach personal safety with engaging age-appropriate lessons and activities. The Safer, Smarter Kids curriculum will provide your child with protective principles and the knowledge needed to identify and avoid unsafe situations, people, and behaviors - and how to access help.
The school counselor will teach these lessons during the regularly scheduled counselor class time. The lessons incorporate videos and in-class activities that address topics such as body boundaries, respecting yourself and others, the difference between safe and unsafe secrets, listening to your “Guiding Voice” and telling a trusted adult when a situation makes you feel confused or uncomfortable. You may view the lesson sequence, specific lesson topics, and related resources for each grade level using this link.
If you would like to learn more about the curriculum and see sample lessons, please visit www.SaferSmarterKids.org. For more information on ways to keep your child safe, teach personal safety lessons at home, and how to identify unsafe adults, visit www.SaferSmarterFamilies.org.
SPELLING BEE IS BUZZING THIS WAY!!
The time is quickly approaching for our annual Meadowlark Elementary spelling bee, which is held on January 20th. This school spelling bee is for grades three, four, and five. Each classroom will be selecting two classroom representatives to participate in the school spelling bee. This selection process will take place in late October in their homeroom
classroom.
The teacher will conduct a written and then an oral spelling bee only with those students that wish to participate (we will not be doing permission slips to participate this year). From this classroom bee, two students will be selected to represent their classroom in the school bee. At the school spelling bee there will be one school spelling bee winner with an alternate chosen as back up. The first place winner will represent our school in the county spelling bee on February 3rd in El Dorado.
There are no words to study for the classroom bee, but the two classroom representatives will receive a list of words to prepare for the spelling bee to be held in January. Please contact Mrs. King, Spelling Bee coordinator, with any questions you might have about our bee.
Meanwhile………happy spelling!
