Journeying in Hope and Love: Building a Culture of Accompaniment
The Road to Emmaus
As they approached the village to which they were going,
he gave the impression that he was going on farther.
But they urged him, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.”
So he went in to stay with them.
And it happened that, while he was with them at table,
he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them.
With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him,
but he vanished from their sight.
Then they said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning [within us]
while he spoke to us on the way and opened the scriptures to us?”
Then the two recounted what had taken place on the way
and how he was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.
~ Luke 24:28-32, 35
Dear St. Clare School Families,
Our amazing and unique community rose to the challenge once again, by putting together our second Day of Service in Collaboration with Catholic Charities. Thank you Chiqui, Lisa, Gemma, and Theresa (Mission and Catholic Identity Committee) for your coordination and hard work. To those of you who came to volunteer and to Kevin Farmer, thank you!
Many thanks to Miss Jiang, Mrs. Pakerla, Mrs. Rizzo, Ms. McKinnon, Mrs. Martinez, and Mrs. Kogura for their participation and presence.
To Bridget Balajadia and her team at Catholic Charities, we are grateful for their partnership. We had about seven “families” of 5-6 who experienced five scenarios that refugees might experience. There were many rich conversations and collective wisdom exchanged.
As Baik Hoh said, what a great Design-Thinking exercise this was! Imagine what decisions refugees have to go through to ensure they survive.
Being able to provide an opportunity such as this is what makes St. Clare School truly UNIQUE!
We seek to inform with intention, to form good humans whose…
…eyes are transformed to see what we turn a blind eye to,
…ears are transformed to hear the voice of the silenced,
…feet are transformed to walk the path of the stranger, and
…hearts are transformed to love as Jesus loves, without condition.
A PRESENTATION OF THE PASSION OF CHRIST | April 14, 10:45A
On Holy Thursday, the Class of 2022 will present Christ’s Passion at our Holy Thursday Prayer Service. The class, with Mr. Nguyen’s guidance has been rehearsing to prepare a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the meaning of Jesus’ last few days. Please join us at 10:45 A.M. in the Church. (Face coverings strongly recommended.)
THE CHALLENGE CONTINUES
Msgr. Fran was pleased to see many students at the 10:30 Family Mass. He estimated about 50 children. He promised that if he sees 100 children at mass, he will allow for Friday school masses to be held in the church. It's really nice to see so many more of our families returning to join in Thanksgiving every Sunday.
OUR COMMITMENT TO SERVING THE NEEDS OF ALL STUDENTS
Our teachers continue to look at a variety of formative assessment data (from quizzes, tests, presentations, projects, running records, ed tech/apps data), standardized assessment data, as well as informal student observations to measure and track student growth. As a team, they are analyzing the data, monitoring growth, and formulating strategies to support all students. Last Wednesday, Ms. Erica Davied from Occupational Therapy Services observed students and shared her observations with administration. At the Faculty Collaboration meeting, she presented ways occupational therapists can help students with executive functioning, fine and gross motor skills, as well as ways for teachers to provide a safe and supportive (least restrictive) learning environment for all learners.
In the next few weeks, teachers will engage in data review, partly in preparation for our accreditation self-study, but mostly because we are building a culture of looking at data to improve our practice to serve a variety of learners. We are grateful to you for your partnership as primary teachers of your children. By reading with and to your children, by teaching the importance of perseverance (try-fail-try again), and by encouraging self-advocacy (asking for what they need from you and from their teachers) shows them that you are there to support their growth (without doing the work for them). Time and again, parents who support their children in this way ultimately realize success and gain the confidence to move forward.

SERVING ST. CLARE REQUIREMENTS: Parent Service Hours
As part of each family’s financial commitment to St. Clare School, all are required to complete AND record 30 service hours per year (15 hours for single-parent households). By this time, you should have recorded around 24 hours of service (9-10 hours for single-parent households).
Ordinarily, hours left unfulfilled by April 30 of each year will be billed via FACTS by May 20 at a rate of $30 per hour. We are extending the deadline for hours to be served and recorded by June 10, 2022. Unfulfilled hours will be billed via FACTS by June 25 at the rate of $30 per hour.
Take the opportunity now to record hours you’ve served and take advantage of the available sign ups for upcoming events to complete your commitment. Contact room reps, PTG officers and Ms. McKinnon to find out how you can fulfill service hours.
If you are interested in volunteering for any of these events, we advise that you get your fingerprinting requirements completed along with other DSJ volunteer requirements. Please contact Ms. McKinnon if you have any questions (teresea.mckinnon@dsj.org OR stclare-office@dsj.org).
Thank you to those who have already fulfilled their service hours requirements. Families who have fulfilled their 2021-22 commitment may begin to count service hours towards next year’s requirement starting May 1, 2022.
Use the link below to the ParentSquare post outlining how to log your service hours.

2021-22 School Calendar
Below, you will find the Calendar Grid for the school year. Some find this difficult to navigate, so I’ve created the Calendar Highlights document which I hope will make it a bit easier for you to consume.
Some changes since the end of the school year: we added September 20th as a NO SCHOOL DAY and our School Year will end a day earlier. The original calendar had us attending 183 days of school, knowing that we had three days over the required 180 days. We are keeping the 181 days in the event we have to close for an emergency due to poor air quality.
Other options to view the calendar include a Google calendar synched to ParentSquare, or subscribing to the St. Clare School Public Calendar below:
