Principal's Post
Dear Patriot Families,
As you know, Johnson City Schools Officials were made aware of a social media threat last week involving Liberty Bell Middle School. No substantiated threat was found. We work closely with the Johnson City Police Department and take all threats against our schools very seriously.
I wanted to take some time to share with you some of our safety protocols that we follow when we are made aware of any type of verbal or social media threat toward our school. We work closely with JCPD any time we become aware of a threat to determine if it is credible. In the case last week, we were aware of a social media threat made by an anonymous account and were able to work with CID (Criminal Investigations Division), the social media companies, and other resources to determine the threat was not credible. As is often the case, students hear bits and pieces of information (most of it unsubstantiated) and as you might imagine, rumors develop a life of their own. Nevertheless, we take every threat against our school and students seriously.
Once the student who made the threat against our school is identified three things will always happen.
1. The student will be assessed by our mental health partners.
2. The student will face school discipline.
3. The student will face appropriate legal consequences (minimum charge of false reporting, which is a felony).
Johnson City Schools has invested significant resources to develop a comprehensive safety program.
It is a good practice to monitor the social media activity of middle school students. As parents, if you or your child ever has a concern about something they see on social media, please reach out to school administrators or our school resource officer to report it. If concerning material exists, please always take a screenshot of the concern to share with school administrators and/or law enforcement. The faster we get information, the faster we can investigate the concern.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any additional questions.
