Internet Safety at DFMS
Digital Citizenship Presentation by Netsmartz
Recap of Netsmartz Presentation for Parents
Today the state approved company of Netsmartz came to do a presentation for our students on Internet safety as part of the Digital Citizenship training required by Utah law (6th grade Thursday and 7th grade Friday). Here is a recap of the presentation so that you can have a conversation with your student. as well as have access to parent resources.
*What if you had 10 pizzas delivered? Would you keep eating pizza beyond your normal couple of slices? That is the premise of social media: Netflix sends you to the next episode in four seconds, YouTube has a list of recommended videos that pop up, etc.
*Balance is important. Have a purpose. Set a timer. Do not let a robot control you- robots send notifications.
*Going outside, spend time with family and friends, be active, challenge yourself to improve talents- do not let social media keep you from these important and healthy parts of life.
*How old do you have to be to open a social media account? 13! Since middle schoolers are not yet 13, parents should partner with students if they have an account.
*Every "like", post, etc. is stored in the company's hard drives. Nothing is ever erased. You are creating a digital profile of you.
*Never share private information.
* Be positive! Show respect for yourself, your family, your community, and the world in anything you post.
*Beware someone who wants to become your "on-line friend." Predators may use tactics such as telling you that you have mutual friends, give you an incentive to be their friend, give you compliments, and trying to get you to share a secret. Never assume anyone you do not know is who they say they are on-line. Always TELL a parent if a stranger tries to befriend you on-line or about anything that makes you feel uncomfortable.
