Principal's Corner
Eagles,
Alice Malsenior Tallulah-Kate Walker, born on February 9, 1944, is a distinguished American author, poet, and advocate for social change. In 1982, she earned the distinction of being the first African-American woman to receive the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, explicitly honored for her novel, The Color Purple. Throughout her illustrious career, Walker has introduced readers to seventeen books, short story compilations, a dozen non-fiction pieces, and numerous essays and poetry collections.
Walker's quote on power resonates with me concerning students. Almost daily, I find myself having conversations with students about finding their power. Whether it be a kindergarten student having a tough time leaving a parent on a Monday morning or a 6th grader adjusting to a difficult or uncomfortable social situation, I remind students of their power to make a choice. Choosing can be more demanding than acting because of the pressure to get it wrong, and, in most cases, not making a choice is the only wrong one.
A kinder student with tears in his eyes as he watched his grandmother leave this morning seemed only to find comfort if he stood beside me. After a few moments, I told the student I needed his help and asked if he felt up to helping another student in a similar situation with an escort to their line in the library. The student wiped his tears and reached a hand out to their classmate, saying, "It's okay. I miss my grandma too." I saw the student stand taller and master his fear when reminded that he had the power to make a change for someone else and that he had value because of his ability to help. At that moment, he had forgotten his worries and focused on what he could control. He left the library that day with a smile and a wave.
I hope that each of us helps the students in our lives to find their power by showing them that they can affect significant change even despite their age.
Cheers!
