Typical Day of a Petroleum Engineer
Petroleum Engineers spend a lot of time in the field doing things like monitoring the progress of certain projects or evaluating safety issues and upgrading systems or equipment. If they are not in the field they are in the office working on things like developing methods for improving oil and gas production or focusing on the economics of a given operation or project.
Salary
The average starting salary for a petroleum engineer who has earned a Bachelor's degree from a survey done in 2007 is 62,236. A more recent survey shows that the overall average salary for a petroleum engineer is 167,712 including additional compensation like bonuses and car allowances.
Education
Most petroleum engineers are required a Bachelor's degree for entry-level jobs, and in order to get accepted into a college engineering program approved by the ABET they need to have excellent grades in advanced math and science courses. Petroleum engineers also need to be in an engineering program that provide coursework in calculus, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, structural geology, etc. and have a background in general engineering concepts.
