NEW - Second 2022-2023 CALENDAR SURVEY
Conroe ISD is seeking public input on the 2022-2023 school calendar. The CISD District-Level Planning and Decision-Making Committee (DLPDMC) is responsible for developing the 2022-2023 school calendar and has developed three drafts for the community to review. Feedback may be submitted from Friday, November 19, 2021, through 8:00 a.m. on Monday, January 3, 2022 via the survey below. The DLPDMC will then review all feedback and make a recommendation to the Board of Trustees at their Regular Board Meeting on Tuesday, January 18, 2022.
Nurse Kendall Update
Spinal Screening
The purpose of spinal screening is to detect the signs of abnormal curves of the spine at their earliest stages so that the need for treatment can be determined. Scoliosis, a common spinal abnormality found in adolescents, is a sideways twisting of the spine. It is usually detected in children between 10 and 14 years of age. Kyphosis, sometimes called round back, is an exaggerated rounding of the upper back and is often confused with poor posture. Many cases of curvature of the spine are mild and require only ongoing observation by a physician when they are first diagnosed. Others can worsen with time as the child grows and require active treatment such as bracing and surgery. Early treatment can prevent the development of a severe deformity, which can affect a person’s appearance and health.
We will be conducting this screening in early January on all 5th grade girls.
The procedure for screening is simple. Female screeners (the nurse and assistant) who have been specially trained will look at your child’s back while she stands and then bends forward. For this examination, girls will be seen separately and individually. STUDENTS MUST REMOVE THEIR SHIRT FOR THIS EXAM. FOR THIS REASON, WE REQUEST THAT GIRLS WEAR A HALTER TOP, TUBE TOP, SPORTS BRA, OR A TWO- PIECE SWIMSUIT TOP UNDERNEATH THEIR SHIRT ON EXAM DAY.
The state requires schools to conduct this screening. If you would like to have your child screened by her physician, please do so during the holiday break and submit a note to the clinic when we return. This will allow your child to opt out of the school screening.
The following is a great video about spinal screening titled “Scoliosis Screening - Catch the Curve”

Art
We hope everyone has a restful and relaxing holiday season! Students in Mr. Hunt’s class are working on their realistic drawing skills and are learning about artist Chuck Close and the grid method. Students in Mrs. Ferguson's class are working on their watercolor skills and learning how to draw a realistic self-portrait.
Thanks to all the kiddos who brought their sketchbook to school! As a reminder, we ask that each art student provide their own sketchbook and pencil, but all other art materials will be provided. Students are welcome to bring their own art supplies to supplement what is provided by Collins but it is in no way required. Happy drawing!
Library
A huge thank you to all the families that supported the book fair. It was one of the best ever and the library is so excited for all the books that we were able to get with the proceeds.
Unfortunately, next week's author visit will have to be postponed until the spring semester. Our author had to cancel for personal reasons and will be unable to come as planned. We will be in contact with him and hope to reschedule the visit for the spring semester. I'm sorry for the inconvenience. Please contact the librarian by email (mwillingham@conroeisd.net) if you have any questions.
