Art with Mrs. Bailey

Mrs. Bailey is excited to be taking a small group of 5th graders to the TASA/TASB conference in Dallas this weekend to represent Rasor. Students will be creating a collaborative artwork and demonstrating the art program at Rasor for the School Board Members and Administrators who attend the conference! What a wonderful opportunity for Rasor to show off their creative side!!! Go Rasor Art Studio!

Coaches' Corner

Below is the link to the October Coordinated School Health Calendar. Please print one out and follow along. Set a goal to complete at least 12 activities each week and return SIGNED to Coach Stone or Valentini in the fitness room for 20 Starbucks!


Counselor Corner

Third and fifth grade students will be taking the CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test) next week. The Cognitive Abilities Test™ (CogAT®) measures learned reasoning and problem-solving skills in three different areas: verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal. Reasoning skills develop gradually throughout a person’s lifetime and at different rates for different individuals. Reasoning abilities are good predictors of success in school and are important outcomes of good schooling. CogAT does not measure such factors as effort, attention, motivation, and work habits, which also contribute importantly to school achievement.

Teachers use CogAT scores to help students learn more effectively. For example, if a student’s score profile shows an uneven pattern of relative strength and weakness, the teacher can provide challenging opportunities for the student to do the kind of thinking he/she does best (building on the student’s strength). The teacher can also support aspects of new tasks that rely on a student’s relative weakness. When the student has established a foothold in an area, the teacher can guide her/him to develop the relatively weaker reasoning skill by applying this skill to the familiar task (strengthening the student’s weakness).

There will be a parent meeting in December to discuss how to interpret the CogAT scores. Please look for an information letter in November to confirm the date and time.

Enrichment Programs

Enrichment Programs and Clubs will start at Rasor on Wednesday, October 22nd. They will go from 2:45 - 3:45 every Wednesday, with the last day being December 17th. Look for forms to come home with students in the next two weeks.

We are seeking volunteers to help Rasor staff man the Enrichment programs. Volunteers would be paired/grouped with Rasor staff to help run the assigned program. If you are interested in helping out, please call Jana Sandall at (469) 752-2911 or email jana.sandall@pisd.edu. The more volunteers we have committed to these programs, the more students that will have the opportunity to participate.

Plano Cardboard Challenge


Rasor Elementary will be hosting #PlanoCC, the first Plano cardboard challenge, on October 11, 2014 from 9am-12pm. This is a day where campuses and communities in Plano are invited to participate in a global day of collaborative creation and play. Last year roughly 90,000 people worldwide participated in the Cardboard Challenge sponsored by the Imagination Foundation. They are estimating that nearly 150,000 people will participate this year and WE, Rasor Elementary and Plano, are going to be among them! Participants will be creating a cardboard community as well as innovative designs to help solve problems that communities face. So what do you need to do to participate? Show up on Saturday, October 11, 2014 to Rasor at 9am wearing GREEN ready to create and collaborate! If you use social media simply share your experience by tweeting and posting about it using the hashtags #cardboardchallenge and #planocc throughout the day!

Come out and watch your kids or join in on the fun and exercise.

Your kids will come home with sponsorship forms in October. Let's encourage our kids to get out and move and do it for a good cause!

Rasor PTA is starting its fall fundraiser! Otis Spunkmeyer Cookie Dough Sales will begin September 25 and run through October 9th.

Cookie Dough will be delivered November 13th.

Be ready for holiday guests with these delicious cookies you just have to bake!

Ways to Help Rasor


Rasor LOVES our volunteers. To become a volunteer you must first complete a background check. You can begin this process at - http://www.pisd.edu/about.us/partners.volunteers/index.shtml. Click on the volunteer application link to begin this process. You must complete a new background check after every July 1st for every new school year.

Box Tops

Rasor Elementary participates in the box top program. Our wonderful PTA heads up this program. When you find box tops on participating items, clip them off and send them with your student to their homeroom teacher.

Tom Thumb

Good Neighbor Program

Help support your school by linking your Tom Thumb reward card to Rasor PTA! Simply link your reward card using the Rasor Good Neighbor Number. Every time you shop at Tom Thumb using your reward card, Rasor gets a percent donation from Tom Thumb. There is no additional cost to you!

1. Fill out the "Good Neighbor Program" form (HERE).
2. Take the form to the customer service desk at your local Tom Thumb store.

every time you shop at Tom Thumb and use your reward card, Rasor PTA benefits!

Take Charge of Education

Target has a program called “Take Charge of Education”. If you have a Target Red card you can link it to Rasor. PTA Scrapbook is looking for pictures of the First Day of School, new staff members, unique classroom activities, music pictures, cool action shots of PE, students in motion – doing stuff, 1st assembly.

Please send to renee.munoz@pisd.edu or you can drop off cd’s or zip files to the front office. Please label with your child’s name and teacher and I will return them. Identifying students in the photos and captions would be helpful.
