From the Lion's Den
York Center Family Newsletter 10/15
We hope you enjoyed the long weekend!
In our second year of working with Eureka Math in District 45, our students are showing us how well they have adapted to the strategies for understanding number concepts. As a building, we are focusing on the Standards for Mathematical Practices that will help students in their math problem-solving. Currently, we are working on Mathematical Practice 1: Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. Our student-friendly goal is "I am learning to understand math problems and not give up when solving them."
This can be challenging for students as math problems typically have more than one step and require students to understand what the problem is asking in increasingly complex ways. Thank you for your help at home working with your children to persevere in other parts of their day. When they find a challenge, it is important to encourage them as they work through the problem so they can feel the success of accomplishing difficult tasks on their own!
Meet Mrs. Scott!
"I love working at YC because everyone is so caring and kind. It's a great feeling to know that when I come to work every day I get to be a part of this positive environment. I feel very lucky in this position of Literacy Leader because I get to share my passion for reading and writing with students, families, teachers, and our community." ~Mrs. Scott
We are lucky to have Mrs. Scott as our Literacy Leader at York Center!

Attendance
Our goal is to have 100% of our York Center Lions here every day and on-time! We take attendance very seriously at York Center. Last week, we averaged 92% of our 3rd Graders, 97% of our 4th graders, and 98% of our 5th graders in attendance each day. Please ensure your child attends school each day and is here before 8:05 am unless he/she is sick.
Please note that if your child has several tardies or absences, you will be receiving a letter from the District reminding you of the importance of good attendance. Being on time to school DOES matter and sets up your child for success for the rest of the day.
School Safety
This week, our staff had our annual training with the Lombard Police Department. They walked us through drills to be prepared for an intruder or other emergencies.

Did you know that Box Tops is Going Digital!! Each box top is worth 0.10.
Download the Box Tops App, create an account, choose the school you want the money to go to (our buildings are listed under York Center), and then scan your receipts! It is that easy! The app recognizes what products have box tops. On the app, you can see how the $ adds up!
Keep a lookout for our PTA fundraiser: TRACK-A-THON! Information will be coming home with your student!

Parental Controls on Devices
Parental monitoring is essential at this age as children begin to navigate different technology tools. There are many tools available to help with this task.
Here is the "Ultimate Guide to Parental Controls"

Apple Devices such as IPads and IPhones can use "Screen Time" to monitor this. Please see this article for details:

Our teachers have been working with students on Digital Citizenship. As students access technology at home and at school, it is important for them to understand what a great responsibility that is as well as how to be safe when on-line.
