Malnutrition

Malnutrition is a condition which the body does not get sufficient or balanced amount of nutrients it needs to maintain healthy tissues and organ functions. It may results in death or long-term development problems in individuals. The cause of deaths are associate with diarrhea, pneumonia, malaria and measles.

Malnutrition also affects people in DCs. In 2006, thousands of elderly people in the USA die annually from lack of nutrients. However, people in LDs affected heavier than people in DCs.

Ill-health

ill-health is another consequence of inadequate food consumption. For example lack of calcium(dairy products, e.g. milk and cheese, vegetables) and vitamin D( obtained by sufficient exposure to sunlight) will cause osteoporosis. In 2006, the National Osteoporosis Society in UK estimated around 3 million people suffering from osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis- a condition in which bones become less dense and fragile. It's caused by diet without sufficient of calcium and vitamin D.

Starvation

Starvation is a state when people suffering from insufficient food consumption. Starvation occurs commonly in LDCs due to the large number of people live in poverty, lack of resources or the effects of natural disasters and political reason such as wars. Example in Mali in 2012, 5 million people were threatened with starvation due to poor harvest & civil rebellion that took place in the earlier year.

Impact of excess food consumption, Obesity and related illness

Consumption of excessive nutrients such as carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and proteins can lead to obesity. Obesity is which a person's body accumulation excessive of body fats over a period of time which can lead to health problems such as high blood pressure, coronary disease, diabetes and certain cancers. Obesity also reduces a person's lifespan. Obesity occurs commonly in DCs than in LDCs . countries such as USA, Australia and Canada, most of the cases are caused by higher consumption of processed food(potato chips) and fast food. The percentage of obesity increased in the USA from 14.5% to 30.9% in the year of 1971 to 2000. Example of obesity in LDC, China. As early as 2002, statistics showed that China had 200 million overweight people, 60 million of whom were obese. The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention said that from 1992 to 2002, China's overweight rate went up by nearly 40 percent and its obesity rate almost doubled.
