January 7, 2019
Welcome back students and Staff, we are ready to kick off the 2019 calendar year!
2018 Momentum Award and 2018 High Progress School of Honor! Wow!
On behalf of the Board of Education, Treasurer, and all B-C-S Staff, I want to congratulate each and every one of you on these awards, and let you know how proud I am of you and your students!
When I am asked by friends and neighbors how our middle school earned such honors, I say that there are many reasons, but here are my top 5 answers:
1. We have great leaders in Mr. Spurlock and Ms. Carroll--but, there are also leaders throughout the building who have ownership, pride, and love in what they do. These leaders step up in big and small ways to do great things for kids and families each day!
2. You have worked deliberately to have great and meaningful relationships with kids and families, including improved communications.
3. You set the bar high for academic rigor that is standards-based and engaging. Teachers have freedom to be creative with instruction!
4. Staff does the work. Time, time, time. Staff use their time in purposeful ways to make lessons and experiences exceptional--there is no substitute for effort.
5. The staff is a fun group of people who bring that sense of fun and joy to their work with students!
Please know that each of you inspire me to work harder and do more! I look forward to being part of and hearing about the next chapter in the story of your innovation and success.
To celebrate your success, the Board will be providing breakfast to you on Monday, January 7th (Mr. Spurlock will provide details on this). We are going to also recognize these state awards at the January 9th (6:00 PM) Board of Education meeting.
Keep up the great work! I wish you all the best of health and happiness in 2019!

More information on Oak Harbor Bands:
The Oak Harbor Band Department is proud to be able to offer a quality instrumental experience to over 300 students on a yearly basis. We believe offering a wide variety of musical experiences produces a well rounded musical education, with the concert bands residing at the very core of that education.
Students begin their instrumental experience in the 6th grade. The Middle School is home to the Oak Harbor 6th & 7th Grade Bands.
The Oak Harbor High School Band Department expands upon the experience students gain at the middle school. The 8th Grade Band is located in our high school and continues the musical advancement from the middle school. For our high school (9-12) students, we offer a high-quality concert band, which participates in OMEA Large Group Adjudicated Event in Class B. Our Marching Band performs for football games each fall, as well as at various other events such as festivals and parades. The high school is also home to the Jazz Band, an elite musical group which explores the nuances of many styles of music, and performs at a variety of concerts and other events throughout the year. Other instrumental groups and activities at the high school include Pep Band during the basketball season, Pit Orchestra during the spring for musical, and OMEA Solo & Ensemble participation.

Oak Harbor Middle School Earns Two State Honors!
It was announced today that Oak Harbor Middle School is the recipient of two huge awards from the State of Ohio for its commitment to student achievement for all.
First, Oak Harbor Middle School was named by the State Superintendent as a “2018 High Progress School of Honor” based on their 2017-2018 Ohio School Report Card performance. Oak Harbor Middle School was one of only 67 schools in the state, and the only school in Ottawa County to receive this prestigious award! The criteria for earning this award are: a school serving 40 percent or more economically disadvantaged students, who achieved performance gains in English language arts and math in the 90th percentile statewide over the last five years among all students.
Upon making the award, State Superintendent Paulo DeMaria commented: "Our mission is to prepare students for a future that has yet to be written. Many consider this to be a daunting endeavor. Your education team, however, has clearly embraced this challenge."
Second, Oak Harbor Middle School was the only school in Ottawa County to earn the “2018 Momentum Award” presented by the State of Ohio Board of Education. Now in its fourth year, the Momentum Award is the State Board’s way of recognizing schools that received A’s on every Value-Added measure included on the Ohio School Report Cards.
Upon making this award, the President of the Ohio Board of Education Tess Elshoff commented to Principal Laramie Spurlock: "I want you to know how much we appreciate your leadership and the dedication your team has to providing a high-quality experience for all students. Please share our gratitude with all of those who contributed to this accomplishment."
B-C-S Superintendent Guy Parmigian proudly stated: “I am so proud of the leadership, and each and every professional at Oak Harbor Middle School, and congratulate them for earning these extraordinary honors from the State of Ohio! I know they all work very hard to get the results they get. These awards reflect the staff's commitment to serving the needs of all students, which includes strong relationships with all students and their families.”
Oak Harbor Middle School is led by Mr. Laramie Suprlock, Principal, and Ms. Leigh Carroll, Assistant Principal. Both are in their 4th year in their respective positions. Oak Harbor Middle School educates all Benton-Carroll-Salem students in grades 4 through 7.
Oak Harbor Middle School will be honored by the Benton-Carroll-Salem Board of Education at their January 9, 2019 Board meeting.
