iPad Apps for Mobile Learning
Educatioanl Apps for K-12 Learning
I explored a variety of Apps that could be used in the K-12 setting while providing examples of how they could be used in the classroom. Below I have listed 5 Apps for iPads.
BrainPOP Jr. Movie of the Week
The BrainPOP App is an App that is great for Kindergarten to Grade 3. It contains a variety of education videos that cover topics of different subjects such as Social Studies, Science, Math, Health and Language Arts. There are two characters Annie and Moby who are like the teachers that take the students through the mini lessons. It urges children to ask questions and creates critical thinkers.
This App would be great to use when learning to edit their writing in Language Arts, and watching how Annie and Mobi edit their own work.
iBooks
This is a very common App for all ages, but I think it is a very important one. iBooks is not only a way for students to download their favorite books on their Apple devices but it also allows them to bookmark interesting pages, or make notes of words they may need to look up.
This would be an excellent tool to use in a classroom with iPads because it may encourage students who are not big fans of reading to open a book if it is on a device they are comfortable with.
SpellingCity
SpellingCity is a great way to learn spelling and vocabulary words by playing a variety of games. It will read the word aloud, use it in a sentence, and also repeats the word. Once the student has worked through the list, they are able to take a test at the end where they receive instant feedback on their results.
This App would be great to use in a large class where the teacher may not be able to get around to each student to ensure they are engaging with each word.
Story Creator
Story Creator is such a neat tool for any age. It allows students to compile their beautiful pictures and tales into a story. It allows them to share and retell their most fond memories.
This would be a great tool for students to use for a class project. They could use it for any subject or even to create a memory video at the end of the year.
Sushi Monster
Sushi Monster is Scholastic's new game for children to use to practice math facts with engaging activities. Various numbers appear on plates of sushi and they are fed to a “sushi monster.” The students are given different products and sums. They must feed the correct combination of sushi plates to solve the equation.
