5th Grade Update
Week of March 5th - 9th
This weeks learning at a glance
Reading- Your child will be taking a Reading CBA on Wednesday, March 7th. This week your child will also be applying their reading strategies to learn about the events leading up to and around the Civil War.
Social Studies- Your child will apply their learning about the Civil War to a presentation and share with their peers. We will also be looking more deeply into the leaders of the Civil War.
Math- Your child will be working on data and graphing this week.
Science- Your child began their Eco-columns on Friday, March 2nd and will be observing the progress of the eco-column throughout the week.
Open House!
Please come to your child's class and check out their hard work. Notebooks and group work do not go home many times and may not be seen by our student's families. Please join us to put eyes on all of the wonderful things we have been working on this year!
Kona Ice will be there!
For 5th grader's families, a 6th Grade PIKE representative will be on campus sharing important information about 6th grade with families. This is a great opportunity to get your questions about 6th grade answered and grabbing the class registration list a bit early!

Growth and Development Lesson- Friday, March 9th
In order to be proactive in our delivery of education concerning human growth and development we will be showing a video to our 5th grade students, as part of our health curriculum, on March 9, 2018. Both grade levels will be watching the videos with their gender group only.
Please watch for an email from your child's teacher/s regarding the details and permissions to not participate from this lesson.
Art Contest
Art Contest
What: Contest to create a flyer for the Justin Clean Up Day
When: Due Friday, March 9th to the office or Miss Kea.
How: All artwork needs a signed permission slip.
Why: To spread the word and make Justin beautiful!
The winning artwork will be featured in an upcoming water bill for the whole town to see. The RULES of the art contest are attached and registration forms are in the office. Top 50 entries get a coupon for a Sonic Treat and the winner gets a ride in the police car.

Do you have a child birth to age 5 at home? NISD hosts monthly playtimes for parents and children from birth to 5 years old, before Kindergarten entry. The Parents as Teacher family involvement program will meet next on Friday, March 9th at the Special Programs Center, 1800 State Highway 114. There are two options for

Box Top Contest-
Box Top Contest – JES earns 10 cents for each Box Top. Our last check was $813.60!! The next contest will be by CLASS. The CLASS that brings the highest percentage of Box Tops will get to play a basketball game called “Hot Shot” with collegiate athlete, our Assistant Principal, Mrs. Oakley. Start sending them to school ASAP to get the competition rolling AND because some of the box tops expire on March and PTA will send those in early. Final deadline for class basketball contest in Friday, March 2nd.

Dollar general has earbuds for $1!
Please make sure your child has earbuds that they can keep at school. You may have learned already from your child, but it is difficult to hear on one of the programs when they do not have earbuds and they can not listen to the various parts read to them.
