Cougar Connect (Boletín)
Week of September 14, 2020 (Semana del 14 de septiembre)
Second Harvest Food Bank
Library Books (Libros bibliotecarios)
Last week I announced that students can check out library books by requesting books through Alexandria. Ms. Cooper recommends requesting more than one book in case the book you want is unavailable. If you are having issues requesting books through Alexandria, please email Ms. Cooper, ecooper@rcsdk8.net, and she will assist you. Requests were supposed to be due by tomorrow, but Ms. Cooper is extending it to Tuesday, September 15, at noon. Books should be picked up from 9:00-10:00 am or 12:00-1:00 pm, this Wednesday, September 16.
Families can pull up in front of the office (where you did for Maze Day) to have books brought to the car. Please have a piece of paper with your student’s first and last name as well as grade level clearly written or printed on a piece of paper to hold up. If you need to walk or bike that is fine, but please make sure to socially distance. Everyone please wear a mask.
Kennedy Receives PBIS Cares Award From The State of California (Kennedy recibe el premio PBIS Cares del estado de California)
PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports. It is an approach that schools use nationwide to improve school safety and encourage positive behavior. Kennedy, along with Hoover and Clifford, received recognition for our efforts. At Kennedy, this is an effort that has been in the works the last couple of years with the help of staff, students, and families. We have implemented a number of programs that have helped to improve school climate and drastically reduce suspensions. Some of these include: Cougar Cash and our student store, the “PAWS” acronym, lunchtime competitions, clubs, educational assemblies, Student of the Month Recognition, the Honor Roll Breakfast, a Kennedy staff leadership team, and more. Congratulations to Kennedy for receiving the California PBIS Community Cares Award to recognize our efforts.
Starting very soon the students will be able to receive digital Cougar Cash and shop at the new digital student store. We will continue with Student of the Month and Honor Roll, but they will look a little different this year. Clubs will also be starting soon.
Kennedy received the go ahead to move forward with Zoom. Student and staff accounts were created last week, and staff received training on Thursday afternoon. I want to thank my staff for attending an hour and a half training on top of a long day of school so that we can start moving forward with Zoom. We will be able to utilize breakout rooms to allow the students more opportunities to speak, and hopefully we can eliminate some of the technology glitches we have had with Google Meet. This week staff will try Zoom out with students at their own pace and teach students how to login to classes since it will be different than Google Meet before we officially all switch over.
Back To School Night (Noche de regreso a clases)
Back To School Night will be Thursday, October 1, 2020. Given all of the technology issues, craziness, slower start, and information overload, we decided to wait until things were a little calmer. The format will look a little different this year to allow more flexibility for families and staff and avoid inevitable technology issues. Instead of having teachers race through their presentation multiple times they will record their presentation. We will send all video presentations out ahead of time so you have a few days to watch them. Then during Back To School Night teachers will be available for you to “meet” them and ask any questions you have. I will provide the times teachers will be available in next Sunday’s Cougar Connect.
Site Council and ELAC (English Language Advisory Committee) Consejo Escolar y ELAC (Comité Asesor del Idioma Inglés)
If you are interested in being an official part of our Site Council/ELAC this year, please send me a paragraph about yourself for our ballot by this Friday, September 18. A voting form will be included in next week’s Cougar Connect. Site Council/ELAC oversees how we spend our Measure U (parcel tax) dollars and site discretionary funds, and helps to make other decisions related to Kennedy programs. We meet once a month after school. Once I know who the members will be then we can set a regular date and time.
We need five official parents/guardians to be a part of our Site Council including at least one parent who has an English Language Learner who can represent ELAC. Others not elected are welcome to join us at our meetings, but will not get to be a part of official votes.
Attendance (Asistencia)
Teachers will be taking attendance within the first five minutes of class. Once attendance has been taken I have instructed teachers not to go back and change it because they need to focus on teaching. If your student is late and marked absent, please contact the office and an office staff member will make the change. Once we have Zoom we will have a better record of when students come in and out of class. We know there have been a lot of technology issues. Communication is key.
We will be looking at the bell schedule more closely this week and deciding if we want to make any changes. I will also be sending out a survey to staff, students, and families for feedback.
Want to know what your student is up to each week, what assignments are due and when? You can find all of this on teachers’ Google Sites. Go to the Kennedy Middle School Website - https://www.rcsdk8.net/kennedy, then “Kennedy Distance Learning,” and then “Teacher Google Sites.” Click on the teacher’s name and then there is a link to their Google Site. On the Google Site towards the top right you can click on “Weekly Assignments” to find out what your student is doing in class each week and what the assignments are. We are using a standard format for the weekly assignments, so you will see the same type of table/chart in this section for all teachers.
Teachers are available each week outside of class time to assist students by appointment. All teachers are available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 2:45-3:10. (Some are available longer on these days and some are available by their choice on Wednesdays). Then all teachers have a second time during the school day they can help students if and when they have some asynchronous work time. This information is on their teacher website. As more teachers are absent, there will be more asynchronous work time because subs are going to be tough to come by as we already saw this past week. (Admin will try to step in, but it is pretty difficult for us given all of the distance learning requirements we have to follow and meetings). Also, as we get homeroom more fine-tuned there will be some additional asynchronous work time as well.
Late and Missing Assignments (Asignaciones atrasadas y faltantes)
Many students have missing assignments and we have also observed a lot of late work. We have been flexible the first few weeks, but we need to get this tightened up because we don’t want this to become a habit. This week is week five of school. Any assignments from the past four weeks that are not turned in by this coming Saturday, September 19, by 11:59 pm, will turn into zeros if they haven’t already and will not be accepted. Starting this week assignments need to be on time. If there is an assignment that can’t be completed during class time or the required deadline because of technology issues or extenuating circumstances, teachers will be reasonable if you communicate with them. However, no more of this turning in assignments weeks later.
We are noticing that some students are completing the assignments in Google Classroom, but are forgetting to hit the button to actually turn in the assignment. Students may want to go back into each of their Google Classrooms and double check this. Also, as a reminder, when an assignment is submitted late, students need to let the teacher know or the teacher won’t know to check for the assignment and grade it.
8th graders, if we are able to have graduation festivities of any sort at the end of the year, you will be held to the normal standards. You must have a cumulative 2.0 or higher to participate, so make sure you are completing your assignments and asking for help. I will be providing more details in the next week.
Dreambox
This is a reminder to students that you should be completing 5 Dreambox lessons each week. This is a math app that can be accessed through Clever (which is our single sign on app so that they don’t have to remember a different set of login information for each app). Wednesdays are a great time to complete these lessons since the workload is substantially lighter on these days.
Yosemite Raffle From Last Year (Rifa Yosemite del año pasado)
Michele Haussler finally got clearance for us to have the raffle for the cash prize from last year’s Yosemite raffle. She came by Kennedy with all of the raffle tickets and I pulled the ticket in front of my office staff. We are not going to publicize the winner’s name, but I can tell you the winner is a current Kennedy family.
The USDA approved an extension to the free meal program through December 2020, which is great news. Here are some highlights.
Effective, 9/1/20, free meals are available to children 2-18 years old.
All families welcome, not restricted to RCSD, Connect, or KIPP students
No meal card is required
Students do not have to be present
Attached below are two fliers with all of the details about how and where you can get meals at RCSD locations. Starting on September 14, there are some new changes. Mondays families can pick up meals for students for Monday through Wednesday, and on Thursdays families can pick up meals for the rest of the week. Again, please read the fliers for more details. We know there are circumstances in which families cannot attend the designated pick up times, but we don’t want any student to go hungry and not have food because of this. Please call 650-423-2279 to request more information about meal delivery.

Pictures From This Week (Imágenes de esta semana)
