Early Learners Highlights!
April 6, 2023
Dear Early Learners Families,
We hope you all had a wonderful spring break! We were thrilled to welcome your children back to school on Monday.
As you know, all District 109 schools were placed on a non-emergency lockdown on Tuesday. Please know that the safety of our students is always our top priority. At no time were students informed of the reason for the lockdown. Teaching and learning continued, uninterrupted- both during the non-emergency lockdown and after it was lifted. Our students had an amazing day!
Please take a moment to read the information below for more details on our Spring Family Event, South Park Spectacular, as well as the music concert and graduation for our Pre-K students.
As a reminder, there is no school tomorrow. We hope you enjoy the extended weekend.
Take care,
Marcia

South Park Spectacular
Please join us for the South Park Spectacular on Thursday, April 20th from 4:00-6:00 pm. This is the only event of its kind where all certified teachers and staff stay at school for the evening while students and families come to visit.
We ask families to adhere to their time slots. This ensures that classrooms are not overcrowded, giving students full access to their teachers and the activities during their visit.
When not visiting grade-level classrooms, families will be invited to participate in an interactive scavenger hunt to spend time exploring our school, interacting with other staff, and enjoying a shared experience as a family.
We look forward to welcoming all of our South Park families to school on April 20th!

WHAT'S HAPPENING IN EARLY LEARNERS?
We were excited to welcome the students back from Spring Break this week! Our Pre-K students started their transition to sitting on the rug rather than in cube chairs for whole group learning. While they are starting to take some steps toward their transition to Kindergarten, we try to stay in the present as much as possible. It is natural to look ahead to summer and beyond with our little ones, but we find it can be unsettling to preview this transition too far in advance. We have two more months FULL of fun and learning, and we encourage our students and families to stay in the present as much as possible as we make the most of our time together this Spring!
This week our Early Learners started an author/illustrator study of Juana Martinez-Neal! We have enjoyed exploring the books that she has written and/or illustrated including “Zonia’s Rain Forest,” “Fry Bread,” “La Princesa and the Pea,” “Babymoon,” “Tomatoes for Neela,” and “Alma and How She Got her Name.” Our classes have also been interested in learning more about Juana’s process and the inspiration she has drawn from her home country, Peru. Each class is making this unit their own, from creating an Amazon rainforest to making their own books, and sharing their name stories. Our students also worked on taking turns and playing games together - what a fun week back at school!
