Updates for the Week
Hello Wilkesboro families! We hope that you’ve enjoyed the sunshine this weekend. It’s been a long time since we’ve had a regular, uninterrupted school week, and we optimistically look ahead and hope that this week will be a full five-day week. Here are some updates for the week of February 22-26, 2021.
On Friday, we will celebrate ending the month with a schoolwide spirit day and scheduled birthday celebrations. We invite all students to wear their green and gold in a celebration of eagle spirit.
We’d like to ask for your help in encouraging students to read outside of school hours. Research shows that the more one reads, the better one reads. By making time for just 15 minutes of reading each day outside of school, students can make accelerated reading gains and grow their vocabularies and language skills exponentially. Our students and teachers are doing the best we can during school hours, but data indicates that all students need to read more each day outside of school. Our media center and classroom libraries are filled with books that kids can bring home. You can help by making time for and monitoring your child’s reading each day.
We continue to accept applications for our pre-k program for the next school year. If your child will be 4 on or before August 30, 2021, they may be eligible for pre-k. We will be conducting screening in March, so please call the office to sign up this week.
Kindergarten sign ups for the next school year will begin on March 1. If your child will be 5 on or before August 30, 2021, your child will be eligible for kindergarten. We will host virtual enrollment throughout the month of March, so please check our webpage in March for more details.
We are still taking orders for our 2021 yearbook. The cost is $25, and we will only order yearbooks for those who order in advance. You can order a yearbook by returning the envelope and payment to school OR by ordering directly online from our website. If you need another form or have questions, please contact Mrs. St. John. https://wes.wilkescountyschools.org/apps/news/article/1348791
You can learn more about what’s happening in your child’s classroom below. We look forward to a great week. Thanks for your support and encouragement from home. Have a good evening!

About Attendance
Parents, please note that since we have moved to Plan A, students who are participating in Plan A will be marked PRESENT or ABSENT. If your child is not in school, you will need to send in absence notes as usual and it will be coded as excused or unexcused. If your child is officially quarantined or excluded by the health department and/or the school nurse, your teacher will offer remote learning. If your child participates and submits work each day, the student will be marked PRESENT OFF SITE (1R). If not, the quarantine absences would be excused. If your child needs to be out, we will work with you to make sure your child doesn't get behind.
For students who continue with remote learning note that in order for us to count your child in attendance off site, we must on a daily basis verify that the student is engaged (completing and submitting assignments), on pace (participating in the virtual classroom), or receiving academic/emotional support (directly from the teacher). If this isn't happening, your child will be counted absent. Please make sure that your child is submitting work and that you are communicating with the teacher daily. Thanks in advance for your help!
