Kindergarten: Kindergarteners are hard at work this month! In reading we are learning to identify the characters and setting of a story. Students are also working on identifying beginning and ending sounds in a given word. In math, we are learning different ways to show a number i.e. on a tens frame, drawing objects, number word, etc. Students are also working on putting numbers in order.
1st Grade: First grade has been busy with addition and subtraction equations. We have been learning new strategies to solve these problems in different ways. Finding text evidence and writing with sentence stems has also been part of our daily activities. The Thanksgiving holiday has brought fun stories, crafts, and learning about the past.
2nd Grade: Second Grade is working diligently on problem solving strategies for both 1 and 2 step word problems. We are learning to look for Capitals and end marks in our own writing, as well as editing other students writing.
3rd Grade: Third grade is having a great time learning a variety of subjects. We continue to work on multiplication and division. The students are doing a great job becoming fluent on their skills. We will begin our fluency tests after Thanksgiving. In science the students are using hands-on approaches to learning about static electricity and electromagnets. We wrapped up our unit of the geography of Michigan and will begin learning about Michigan's first people. In Language Arts we are working on reading and writing strategies. We are also focusing on building stamina in these two areas. Keep up the great work practicing math facts and reading at home!
4th Grade:
Social Studies: Our 4th Grade Geographers have just finished their adventure with the Maps, Globes, and 5 Themes of Geography unit! Ask your 4th Grade geographer about MR. HELP!! The 5 Themes and Map Skills unit was a very important foundational unit as we will be applying the concepts of the 5 Themes of Geography and Maps to all our future units in Social Studies. Mrs. Gabriel's Geographers ended our unit with a culminating task creating a picture book on the 5 Themes. They turned out great! This week we explored the concept of voting and Election Day. This tied in really well with our November 6th election! Next week we are starting our Government unit. The 4th Grade Political Scientists are excited to start as Mrs. Gabriel has been fielding a lot of intriguing questions about elections and our government!
Math: Fourth Graders are learning a variety of methods to multiply a two-digit number by a one-digit number!
5th Grade:
Science- Earth's place in the universe continues to be incorporated into our 5th grade Science classes. Students have been working hard to differentiate between rotation and revolution along with looking for the observable patterns. We began seasons today and the classes will be providing a diagram to show seasonal patterns throughout the year.
Social studies: Classes are wrapping up a unit on Native Americans with an in class project. During the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas, we will learn what life was like in the Asia, Africa and Europe between the 1200's and 1400's.
Math- 5th graders finished their unit on adding and subtracting fractions. Students are now being introduced to decimals. They will be comparing, adding, and subtracting decimals over the next couple of weeks. Students also started working with an online program called Zearn. Zearn.org allows students to practice skills that have been previously taught and moves students through 5/6th grade curriculum at their own pace.
6th Grade:
Social Studies- We are studying how Canada became more of an independent nation and moved west to develop the land through the use of Historical Maps and identifying cause and effect relationships.
Math: The students wrapped up their unit on Geometry. We are now focusing on ratios and developing double number lines. In advanced math, the students are making models to demonstrate division of fractions. We will also be starting on algebraic expressions and learning how to solve equations with variables.
Science- We will be studying Body Systems in 6th grade after Thanksgiving
English - We are writing a compare and contrast essay.

Thankful For Note
If you didn't get a chance at conferences, please take a moment to write a note of appreciation to any staff member. It can be to a teacher your child currently has or one that they have had in the past. There are few things more meaningful to a teacher than to receive a specific thank you note!
You can email it to Mrs. Tepper -- kristina.tepper@uticak12.org
1st Quarter Report Cards
During November, Havel will distribute reports cards electronically. The first marking period grades will be sent electronically to families after scheduled parent-teacher conferences at the end of the day on Friday, November 16, 2018.

The report cards will then be automatically e-mailed to the address that is used to register the PowerSchool account. If you already have a PowerSchool account, you do not need to take any further action. The report card automatically will be sent to you electronically.
