DCD Session Assignments
Reading Wall of Fame
Independent Reading has been a component of Balanced Literacy that everyone has incorporated into their ELA Block. Students (K-5) are reading at school and at home each day and recording their steps (entries) on their reading log. We want to celebrate the students' hard work!
We are creating a Reading Wall of Fame for our students (K-5) that have read 500+ steps (ARC) or 500+ log entries (Non-Arc). Once a student has read 500 + steps or has 500 + entries in their reading log, please complete the Reading Step Hall of Fame.
Action Item:
Enter students who have read 500 + steps/500 + log entries so we can celebrate your students!
Girls on the Run
Girls on the Run volunteer coaches are the heart and soul of our organization. Coaches serve as mentors for our girls and do not have to be runners to have a great impact! Anyone who shares a common belief in the inherent strength, bravery, and limitless potential of all girls is encouraged to get involved.
To ensure that every girl participating in the program at Mashburn has a high quality and impactful experience, 1 to 2 volunteers are needed to serve as coaches this Spring. The season begins February 11th and meets for 10 weeks on Tuesdays and Thursdays 3:15-4:30pm.
Are you interested in volunteering?
Coaches are provided with all the training, support and supplies needed to have a rewarding experience with the girls. Please contact Molly Stone, Executive Director at info@girlsontherunnorthga.org or 678-845-8216.

SIOP: Clock Buddies
Need a quick way to get students paired for partner work? Use the Clock Buddies Strategy!
Directions • Make one copy of the blank clock for each student. Explain that they are to move around the classroom, making "appointments" with twelve different students. When the student finds a classmate who can meet at the agreed upon hour, each student signs the other's clock.
Tell the students to keep the completed clock in their notebooks so that they will have access to it each day. When you plan a paired activity, simply direct the students to quickly find their "2 o'clock appointment" and to sit together with this student. If a partner is absent, students may sit with another student whose partner is absent or you may wish to have the student work with others as a group of three.
Britannica Schools (Dictionary, Images, Articles--OH MY!!!)
Dictionary Tool
Need a safe tool for students to look up new vocabulary? Use the Dictionary Tool in Britannica Schools which is located in the Media & Research folder in Classlink.
Have students...
-Choose Britannica Schools
-Choose Elementary
-Search word in the search box at the top
-Choose "Dictionary"
Notice, you can also search for images, videos, articles, and websites
-The complexity of the definition changes depending upon the level you choose.
Article
-Leveled articles
-translation option--great for our EL students!
-students can cite their work using the cite tool
-As a teacher, you can send articles to your Google Classroom
-You can also find the Lexile level for the article by choosing "teacher" --great differentiation tool!
I highly encourage to revisit Britannica Schools if you haven't already!!! :)
Motivator Suggestions
We are in one of the more difficult times of the school year. The holidays are over, we are back to a daily routine, and we are tired. The kids are too. If you've noticed that your students' motivation is low maybe it's time to try something new. This link has lots of easy to implement motivators that might be just what you need to spice things up in your classroom. I encourage you to take a few minutes to check it out!
