Orana Catholic Primary School
Term1 Week 2
TO GIVE IS TO RECEIVE
Our community values an attitude of enthusiastically applying energy and effort to become better learners. Excellence is evident when:
• we do our best to develop our talents and share them with others
• we have high expectations of what we can achieve
• we take risks and experiment with the way we learn
• we work hard to do our best work
• we celebrate our achievements
Prayer
A Short School Prayer
Almighty God,
We give you our school.
We give you all the teachers and staff who work here,
We give you all the children who study here.
We pray our school would be place of great discovery, adventure and creativity.
May it be a place where we love to learn and where we learn to love,
A place where every one is respected and all are deeply valued.
We ask all this through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Dear Parents and Carers
This year, we are moving to a distributed leadership model, that is the current best model for school leadership. We welcome Mrs Bonnie Lynch to the role of Curriculum Coordinator and Mrs Sue Tormay to the role of Pastoral Care Coordinator. These newly established roles will be developed as the year progresses. We congratulate Bonnie and Sue and look forward to their impact on the students, families and staff at Orana. Mrs Caroline Mavrick continues as Early Years Coordinator. Mrs Mavrick has been in this role for 6 years, ensuring that the Early Childhood Education at Orana is modelled on research-based best practice. These roles, along with the contribution of the Leadership Hub (Mrs Kathryn Alp, Miss Amy Dreyer, Mrs Bonnie Lynch, Mrs Caroline Mavrick and Mrs Perrigo) will continue to drive whole school improvement.
Over the last two weeks, classes have been discussing our Motto “To Give is to Receive”, School Gospel Values and crest. Information on the school history and our faith story can be found on our website, https://www.orana.wa.edu.au/our-faith-story/
Unfortunately, we had to change the Pre-primary - Year 6 Information Evening due to the current restrictions. On Wednesday, an audio PowerPoint presentation was sent home for each year level. Please take the time to listen to and view the presentation. The presentation will assist in developing an understanding of the procedures and expectations in each year level. Please direct any questions that you have after viewing the presentation to your class teacher.
Students have been working collaboratively to co-construct their Class Code of Conduct. The Class Code of Conduct statements have been shared with families in the Parent Information PowerPoint. Please review these with your children. We have also published our Behaviour Education and Support Guidelines (Draft) https://www.orana.wa.edu.au/school-based-guidelines/ Please look through these draft guidelines. If you wish to comment on these, please contact our Pastoral Care Coordinator Sue Tormay.
I appreciate and understand that there is some uncertainty around the current Covid-19 situation. At Orana, we have developed a Response Plan, using CEWA guidelines, to ensure education continuity if we are directed to transition to remote learning. Our community will action the following procedures, if required.
· If directed by the Chief Health Officer / CEWA that face-to-face teaching is deemed not possible (class/year level or the school community), students will transition to remote learning.
· Parents and carers will be notified by SMS / email.
· The following platforms will be used: Seesaw - All Years; Teams - Year 3 to 6.
Orana Catholic Primary School is well placed to deliver online learning. Today, staff did a trial remote lesson with students to explicitly teach the protocols and to trouble shoot any issues.
Today, we celebrated the Feast Day of Rosendo Salvado with a class-based liturgy. Unfortunately, our House Mass and activities were cancelled due to the current year level restrictions. The students in Salvado enjoyed an icy-pole to celebrate their Salvado House Day. One of our School Improvement Goals for 2022 is to implement a whole school focus on the charism of each of the Orana Houses; Francis, Ward, Salvado and MacKillop. Information about the Orana Houses is available on our website. https://www.orana.wa.edu.au/house-factions/
Please remember that supervision starts at 8.30am. Students should not be left unattended before this time. Supervision finishes at 3pm for Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten and at 3.30pm for Year 1-6 students. If you need to be at school earlier or cannot arrive to collect your children until after these times, OSHC services are available on site and details are on our website on the following link: https://www.orana.wa.edu.au/out-of-school-hours-care/
A Term 1 Planner is available on the website under News and Events – Calendars or via the following link: https://www.orana.wa.edu.au/calendar. Please regularly check the Dates to Remember section of the newsletter for updates. Various school policies are also available on the school website including our Code of Conduct, Behaviour Education and Support Guidelines and Dispute Resolution: https://www.orana.wa.edu.au/policies/
God bless and stay safe,
Dee Johnston

Celebrating the Sacraments in 2022
The following years will celebrate a sacrament this year.
Year 3 – Reconciliation
Year 4 – Eucharist
Year 6 – Confirmation
If you are new to Orana, or have any queries about your child celebrating the sacraments, even if they are not in the year levels mentioned above, please email kathryn.alp@cewa.edu.au.
Salvado Celebration/Feast Day
In 2022, Orana is focusing on our four Houses – Salvado, Ward, MacKillop and Francis. We aim to develop in the children, an understanding of who these significant Catholic figures were and why they head our four houses.
Today we celebrated our first House Day for this year - Salvado. Our Year Level Liturgies celebrated the life of Bishop Rosendo Salvado and we explored ways that we can follow in his path. Salvado House students were given a free Zooper Dooper as an added bonus!
Crunch and Sip
Orana is now registered as a Crunch and Sip school. Please see our pledge below.
If you wish to read more on the benefits of the program and see some fresh food ideas, please visit the parent information section of the website. https://www.crunchandsip.com.au/parents
Participating in a daily Crunch&Sip break provides an opportunity for children to drink water and eat an extra serve of vegetables or fruit to support good health and to help with learning and concentration in the classroom.
Crunch&Sip is also a fantastic opportunity to increase vegetable intake by choosing to pack vegetables more often.

From the P & F
It is the end of Week 2 and we hope everyone has settled into their routines and new classrooms.
We would like to thank Mrs Dee Johnston, Mrs Kathryn Alp and all the staff for the navigation of the ever changing environment that Covid-19 brings. We appreciate everything you do for our school community and for keeping us safe.
Our very first P&F meeting for 2022 will take place online via Teams between the P&F executives and our Principal. We will update all our Class Representatives on the outcome from that meeting and get them to pass it onto the rest of our school community.
All of our Class Rep. positions have now been filled. We would like to take this opportunity to welcome those who volunteered and thank them for offering their assistance during the year. The first duty of our Class Reps is to collate class contact lists for our parents, so we would appreciate if you could assist them by completing these lists over the next week.
For all our new families, please join our Parents of Orana Facebook Page and make sure to reach out to your Class Rep. to get connected to your Facebook Year Group.

How to help your child make friends in school
Navigating a new school and making new friends can be a daunting experience for any young child and their parents - and transition is not always easy. For children starting kindergarten aged four, five or six, friendships are often formed based in who is physically closest to them in the school yard or classroom.
As they grow older, friendships slowly become more reciprocal.
While finding friends can happen naturally and with ease for some children, there are things parents and schools can do to help facilitate these relationships if a child is finding the process difficult.
Kind regards
Kath Warburton
