Nike Valley Twilight Invitational
The Collins boys’ country team traveled to Terre Haute, IN on Oct. 5th to compete in the Nike Valley Twilight Invitational (open race). The meet was run on the venerable LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course which is not only home to the Indiana High School State Meet, but the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships too. This is the first time in school history that the Titans have run at night under the lights. Their pre-season 3K time trial was at their home Bullskin Course at twilight, just before sunset.
Senior Nolan Thomas led the way with a tenth place finish in 16:56.5. Thomas went out fast and chopped 21 seconds off of his personal record (PR). Thomas said, ”The weather and the conditions were good. I liked the course and that helped me drop my time.” Thomas’ time is the eleventh best in Collins history. That moved him up to be the fourth runner on the Collins All-Time list behind State Champion Jay Solinger ’15 who has the eight best times. Following Solinger are Jacob Hershberger ’16 (#9 at 16:55) and Devon Fielding ’13 (# 10 at 16:56.2).
The Titans team time of 1:30:27 (18:05 per top five scorer) was their fastest in over five years. Sophomore Gabe Vergara took 21 seconds off of his PR. About being inspired for a big PR, Vergara said, “I just did it for my nephew who recently passed away.” Rounding out the Titan scoring were freshman James Solinger (18:25), senior Jeremy Yocum (18:44), and sophomore Cole Martens (PR 18:56).
Coach Sanderlin said, “This was a fantastic meet and a very exciting race to watch. Our athletes ran a great race with six of our eight runners getting either a PR or season best. This enabled us to run our fastest team time since I have been here. It was a fun, relaxed atmosphere on a great course.”

The Running Titans travel to Charlie Vettiner Park on Oct. 12th to compete in the Rebellion Classic. Then they are at home on Oct. 17th on the Bullskin Course (Joyes Station Rd. and US 60) to host the Border Battle. The Border Battle will pit Team Shelby (Collins and County) against Team Oldham (North and South).

We are looking for hosts for incoming exchange students, arriving next fall for the following school year. Hosts commit to room and board only, as students come with their own insurance and spending money. As their coordinator, I will help with initial paperwork, secure the school slot, and maintain the placement all year. Right now , we have Hanna from Norway who wants to join the choir and likes hiking and working with kids. Or, there’s Mads from Denmark who is into soccer, or Morris from Germany who is a junior fireman in his town, and specializes in trampoline jumping. All speak great English, but need you to host them!! Contact me with any questions/interest. Sally Crespo at 502-593-0318 or sunbeam916@yahoo.com.
