2019-2020 COURSE REQUESTS
Counselors have now completed individual academic advising sessions for your students. We encourage you to log-in to ParentVue/Student Vue to review your course requests for the 2019-2020 school year. A few things to keep in mind:
- All students should have 7 course requests (this can include period release) and a study hall.
- If you are taking an AP course, please take a moment to review the AP Course Information Sheets that have been loaded online. These are designed to give you an idea of what the course content and rigor contains, as well as the type of assignments students can expect. In addition, all students taking an AP course need to sign the AP Contract.
- If you are taking a DE course, there are a few steps to complete the registration (all links available below):
- 1) Apply to NOVA and obtain a NOVA ID
- 2) Qualify for course based on test scores (SEE FORM FOR MORE INFORMATION)
- 3) Fill out the NOVA DE Intent form
- Please be sure you have completed all three of the above or you will not be eligible to take the course.
When thinking about next year's schedule, keep in mind balance. Students are often pulled in many directions and find that they must balance academic challenge, numerous (and sometimes competing) extracurricular commitments, family and work obligations, available time, stress and personal joy of learning in life. We want all students to select a course schedule that will provide them with a level of challenge to stretch themselves and pursue individual interests. We do not want schedule choices to harm quality of life or your child's ability to grow as a healthy (emotionally, mentally, physically, and socially) teenager.
NEW ELECTIVE - Women's Studies! This came on board late and we would love to offer it if the interest is there.
PLEASE keep the following deadlines in mind. May 1 all course request paperwork is due (AP Course Agreement, Dual Enrollment application (see above), Waiver of a Full Day request for early release, any course applications, Teacher Assistant contracts.) The course change deadline is June 1, 2019. Please fill out the schedule change request form if any course changes need to be made. It will go to your counselor and you will receive a response when it has been completed. After June 1, no further changes will be considered.

When it comes to your mental health, spring can improve your mood and aid depression in many ways. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you embrace the warmth and cheeriness of spring.
Exercising Outdoors
As spring rolls in, exercising outdoors is the perfect reason to enjoy the warmth. Also, with longer days, there’s very little reason not to take advantage of this opportunity. Whether it’s a quick jog around the neighborhood or taking your yoga mat to the back porch for a sun salutation, spring is the perfect time to elevate your mood with exercise.
Getting Some Sun
After a particularly dark and gray winter, it’s time to embrace the sunshine. When your skin is exposed to natural sunlight, your body produces vitamin D. Scientists have found that sufficient levels of vitamin D improve the moods and overall mental health of people, especially those living with Seasonal Affective Disorder. Give your mood a boost by going outside and enjoying some sunlight. Go for a walk with a loved one or work from home on your deck. Catching a few rays is the best way to enjoy spring.
Eating Well
During the winter months, it’s normal to crave sugary, carb-heavy foods. Now that it’s spring, it’s time to consider eating well-balanced meals that leave you feeling light, yet satisfied. Choosing fruits and vegetables will give you the energy boost you need to jump into spring. Also consider foods rich in omega-3s, such as oily fish, eggs, and spinach. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids will not only boost your mood, but offer delicious meal options as well.
Reaching Out
Invite friends and family over for a dinner party on the deck or offer to meet up for a coffee at an outdoor cafe. Springtime should be spent outside, enjoying the temperate weather before summer becomes sweltering. Your family and friends want to spend time with you, so enjoying the outdoors with everyone is your best option.
PEER (Positive Experiences in Educational Relationships
Our PEER students have been busy promoting positive messages for healthy habits and activities. From Instagram videos to the cafeteria bulletin board, and from bathroom stall messages to grab-and -go compliment notes ... John Champe students are getting some helpful ideas for living healthier, happier lives!

SOURCES OF STRENGTH
Each month our Sources of Strength program promotes a different section of the wheel. This March we were spreading the word about the benefits of participating in healthy activities.
When people think of ‘healthy activities’ most people think of some sort of exercise whether it’s going to the gym or playing a sport, but working out isn’t the only healthy activity available. A healthy activity can be anything that you do purely for enjoyment that helps reduce daily stress. For example, many students enjoy drawing and listening to music. Activities such as these give students a break from the stress they are feeling and help give them a safe alternative to more risky options of relief.
As part of our initiative, we have already created a new display in our showcase by the cafeteria. In our advisory, we created silhouettes and filled them with healthy activities that we enjoy. Hopefully, your students will stop by and take a second to look and see if they are interested in trying any of our favorite healthy activities.
Additionally, we will be putting up a new monthly ‘potty talk’ providing this information to the students.
