Girls Golf - Joellen Vogt places 20th at State!
Golf - Coach DeVoe
A historical moment at EHS when freshman Joellen Vogt qualified for the KSHSSA Girls State Golf Tournament. Joellen finished second-place twice and had a fourth-place finish leading up to the Regionals.
She finished 8th place at Regionals and finished 20th place at the State Tournament to become the very first EHS Girls Golfer medalist. It was an exciting year for the EHS Girls Golf Program. The team looks forward to building on Joellen's success next year with hopes of sending the whole team to the state tournament!

Comments:
We figured after beating Baldwin at the league meet last week we knew we would have our work cut out for us especially on their home course. Add to that the week we had emotionally and this was going to be a battle. I was confident that the number one goal of simply finishing in the top three and advancing to the state meet was in the bag, so I was only left to wonder how the running would go. Despite finishing second, I thought we performed admirably today. We all ran good times and we competed well. Baldwin simply flipped the script from last week. Today they were the aggressor, jumping out to a lead and we had trouble fighting back through them as we did to them a week ago. We are going to work on finding that again next week. Leading the way was freshman Sydney Owens who smashed her previous personal best with a 19:29. Sydney was also the regional champion, leading from about the 800m point of the race to the end. Junior Mackenzie Mayer joined Sydney as our only other individual medal winner grabbing 10th place in a nail bitter finish. Junior Maya Pattison had the biggest improvement today dropping her season best all the way to 21:00. Despite how lopsided the score may look between us and Baldwin, I think reality is that we are closer than that. We had a very distracting week, and we trained pretty hard Monday-Wednesday. Going into next week we are going to gain some focus and work to get our legs under us. Louisburg has a good
young team and ran great today, however, I still expect this year at state to be a repeat of the last two years featuring Baldwin, Buhler, and Eudora in some order fighting it out for the top three spots.

The boys had another good outing today. We knew going in that running with Bishop Miege would be a tall order. Bishop Miege is one of the top ranked teams in class 4A, so it was a great opportunity to see how we measured up. So, coming into the race, the focus was on just running our race. Be patient early, and begin moving after the first half mile. We didn’t want Miege’s quick start to take us out of our element. We were just going to run our race, see how good Miege is, and make sure we keep every other school behind us. At the end of the day, mission accomplished. And, to top it off, we ran some really good times for us today.
Freshman Zach Arnold led the way for the boys for the third week in a row. Zach looked strong through the middle portion of the race, pulling up even and even ahead of Miege’s number two runner for a while before the final kick dropped him from 3rd to 4th place. Regardless, it was a great race for the young runner today, and he was rewarded with an outstanding time of 17:06 for the effort. Junior Cody Loganbill gutted out a very tough race for him physically and even though he wasn’t feeling his best still managed a good PR performance on the day. Another freshman Alex Clobes ran his usual come-from-behind race strategy. Alex is the most patient runner on the team. Today he was in about 45th place about a half mile into the race and worked his way all the way to 11th. Junior Traeger Rader looked great today breaking 18 minutes for the first time this season. Finally, running nearly one minute PRs today were Freshman Miles Morford and Sophomore Ethan Gales. This is a boys team that is really rounding into form and has a great identity as a patient racing team that continues to come on as the race gets longer and longer. It’s also a young team. We don’t have a senior on the team and field three freshman on the varsity team. I am excited to see how our young team can finish this season next Saturday.
Up Next...
Both teams are headed to the 4A state meet in Wamego next Saturday. This will mark the second year in a row that both teams have qualified for the state meet. The girl’s are eyeing another top three performance and the boy’s are looking to improve their ranking to close out last season.

Varsity Volleyball - Coach Cleveland
The Lady Cardinals traveled to Tonganoxie for their last Frontier League match of the season last Tuesday. Going into this match, the team worked hard at practice and prepped for another new rotation. Two more of our starters were out of our starting rotation for the night. We called up sophomore middle blocker Sawyer Schreiner and freshman outside attacker Havayah Harvat to step in. This was nothing new for Schreiner, she had contributed quality minutes during other matches throughout the season in different positions. As for Havayah, this was her first time stepping on the varsity court.
The Cards got off to a slow start to start the match. With a new rotation and a few young jitters, it took us a while to find our groove. We, unfortunately, did not get off to the start we had all hoped for. However, the girls continued to persevere through the trading of points against Tongie. Halfway through the first set, our juniors Mallory Vickers, Sadie Walker and Abby Watson controlled the backcourt in both serving and passing. Along with Jayla Pierce dominating the net both offensively and defensively. The Cards were able to turn things around and won the first set and the match. 25-22, 25-20, 25-19
Jayla had a fantastic match against Tonganoxie. Her stats speak for themselves. Her senior leadership truly shined bright throughout the entire match. As a senior, her court presence on the offensive and defensive side of the net was unstoppable. She finished the night with 13 kills and 12 blocks.
V Volleyball Sub State Matches
Semi-Finals vs Baldwin:
The Lady Cardinals hosted the 4A Sub-State on Saturday. The Cardinals were ranked second going into the tournament against #1 Louisburg, #3 Bishop Miege, #4 Baldwin and #5 Tonganoxie. Sub-State volleyball looked quite differently this year for all classes throughout the state. Due to the wonderful Covid, KSHSAA thought it would be best to place us in close contact areas. In the past couple of years, sub-state seatings were decided on records.
The first match of the day for the Cards was against the Baldwin Bulldogs. This was our fourth meeting with the Bulldogs this season. The last three matches resulted in wins for the Cards. Going into sub-state, as a team, we knew this match would be totally different. The first set of the night was nerve racking for the cards. We rode a roller coaster ride the entire first set. Between the attacking and digging errors, it was hard for the Cardinals to pull ahead of the Bulldogs.
The second set of the match started out with a serving error for the Cards. That was definitely not the start we were hoping for. The Cards bounced back quickly with a beautiful pass in serve receive from junior libero Mallory Vickers to junior setter Emma Durr. To finish up the in system pass and set, junior outside hitter Sophia Ewy drilled a ball down the line that resulted in a kill. The cards rolled through the rest of the second set 25-15. The girls did a great job in serve receive, we attacked well and played great defense. The momentum was definitely on our side going into the third set.
The Cards started out dominant in the third set with a big side out. We also got on a roll defensively by slowing down Baldwin’s key attacker in the middle. She did her best by putting up a wall at the net. This resulted in her tipping and we answered with some key attacks on broken plays. Towards the end of the set, the cards did a great job of digging up several Baldwin attacks. However, we struggled to score in transition. Our fight to finish the match was there, but it took us a few extra rallies to get there. The Cards won the match in the third set 25-21. Next up, Miege in the Championship!
Key players of the match: On offense, sophomore middle blocker Josie Pickett. She finished the night with 12 kills out of 19 attempts. She also chipped in two blocks on defense as well. On defense, senior middle blocker Jayla Pierce was a beast at the net and blocked 8 balls. Jayla has been our most consistent blocker at the net all season. Not only did we rely on her at the net, but Jayla also dug up 12 balls on the night as well. Along with being a primary passer for us in serve receive. Two other key defenders for the cards in the backcourt were juniors, Sophia Ewy and Mallory Vickers.
Championship match vs Bishop Miege:
The Sub-State Championship match on Saturday was against a tough Bishop Miege team. Throughout the week, the cards worked hard to prepare for this match up. At the start of the match, Miege got the jump on us early. We struggled to close the block against their middles and they made no mistakes. Defensively against cross-court attacks, Sophia Ewy and Mallory Vickers did a fantastic job. Offensively for the cards, we did okay on serve receive. Emma Durr did a great job of getting to and bettering the ball on second contact. As for our attacks, Miege dug up everything we attacked at them. It was hard to beat a team that made no mistakes. We lost in two sets 16-25, 15-25.
The 2020 volleyball season was a crazy ride. We finished the season with a record of 17-11 and held a strong ranking in the 4A Top 10 throughout the entire season. We defeated teams that we struggled to beat in past years. We also lost to some teams that we should have beat. As a program, we were very fortunate to make it through an entire season without a single positive Covid case. We had a few girls sit out a couple of times due to close contact, but we persevered. Covid did not get the best of us, but we did have a handful of injuries throughout the season on all three teams. On varsity, we lost our libero Harper Schreiner to a hand injury. That was a huge loss for us and during the toughest part of our season. Senior middle Jayla Pierce took on an entire new roll and played six rotations for us. We also called up Mallory Vickers to replace Harper as libero. Both of these ladies did a fantastic job for us. We asked a lot of both girls and they delivered!
In past seasons, we have had several girls put up big stats and have earned spots on the EHS record list. Unfortunately, due to new KSHSAA and country rules, we were 10 matches short on the season. Even though we were short some matches, Jayla Pierce hit a personal best on the season. She completed her season with 104 blocks. She hit 100 blocks during the match against Baldwin at Sub-State. Beating her record of 98 last year.
Thank you ladies and coaches for all of your hard work this season. We stayed positive and worked hard through a lot of uncertainty. Be proud of all that you have accomplished!
Varsity Football - Coach Hayden
The Eudora Cardinal football team lost to the Spring Hill Broncos last Friday by a score of 16-20. It was a hard-fought battle, with the Cardinals going into halftime up 16-7.
After half, the teams battled back and forth, with a couple of big moments going in Spring Hill’s favor. Facing a 4th and 4 at mid field, I opted to go for it on 4th down, ultimately turning the ball over to Spring Hill. They were able to score after that 4th down stop to make the score 16-14. Another pivotal moment in the game, on 1st in 10 in Bronco territory, I decided to run a naked boot pass, which lost yards for our team and put us in a bad field position. All we had to do was run the clock out and punt the ball away and make Spring HIll earn the win by driving the field.
The boys played their hearts out and played well enough to win. As the coach, I will learn from this and be better for them moving forward.
Defensively, the Cardinals played extremely well and gave us an opportunity to win. Brayden Beerbower (11) picked off the Spring HIll offense in the second quarter for a score to give us the 16-7 lead and the momentum. Kale Hammerschmidt (10) also added an interception. The Cards were once again led in tackles by Cael Lynch (12), who had 19 tackles and brought his total to 131 tackles on the season. This is good enough for the lead in the state of Kansas.
Offensively, the Cardinals were held to only 120 yards rushing by a strong Spring Hill Defense. Brayden Beerbower (11) led the offense with 64 yards rushing and 1 touchdown. Brayden now has 843 yards and 7 touchdowns on the season.
The Cardinals open the first round of the playoffs Friday at home vs. the Piper Pirates. The Cardinals are technically the visiting team and will be wearing their white jerseys. The Cardinals will be looking to win their first playoff game since 2015.
Varsity Soccer - Coach Erpelding
The varsity soccer team lost 6-0 last Thursday to Tonganoxie, and it was a frustrating 6-0 loss. We did not play as badly as the scored indicated, and we actually controlled large portions of the game, but could not finish. All of their goals came in bunches and from mistakes by us.
EHS will play tonight in the first round of the 4A Regional bracket. The team will travel to Lawrence to avenge an early-season loss to Bishop Seabury, 4:00pm start.
JV Soccer - Coach Mathern
@ Ottawa
This game was really tough for some reason. The boys showed up with close to no energy and honestly did not look ready to play. Garret Shoemaker hit an absolute bomb from around half and somehow found its way into the back of the net. Other than that brief moment, we did not really look to attack or play our game. EHS would lose 1-4
@Tongie
What a great way to end the season! The boys came out like they had something to prove! This was our last game of the year and they left it all out there. Freshman Tommy Welsh got us on the board in the first half with another great finish for his second goal of the year. I would also like to highlight that freshman Sean Moffit played an outstanding game to end his freshman year. His work rate off the ball really stood out to me this game. Coming out of half time I told the boys that this game might get stopped early due to weather so we better stay focused and leave it all on the field. Tongie scored early in the second half to make it 1-1 but the boys knew we were still controlling the game. With about 20 minutes left in the game, the temperature dropped about 10 degrees and the wind changed directions. We earned a free-kick from about 55 yards out. Junior Garret Shoemaker stepped up to put a good ball into the back post. Garrett kicked it just as the wind picks up and this ball sails and then dipped right under the goalie's hands to win us the game! Tongie ended up calling the game right after this due to lighting. What a way to end the season!
Debate - Coach Raugewitz-Blick
The Cardinals competed at the Seaman Fall Classic debate tournament today, debating in the Novice division with a total of 40 teams.
Shai Nettles & Dakota Copeland went 3-1 and took 6th place overall, earning 15 speaker points (For context: lower points are better, and the best speaker point score a team could have after 4 rounds would be 12, so this is super good!).
Brett Freisberg & Austin Fillinger also went 3-1, earning 19 speaker points and ending the day in 12th place.
