At-Home Learning (Aprendizaje en casa)
As announced by Dr. Baker and State Superintendent, Tony Thurmond, yesterday, California will be finishing out the rest of this school year with at-home learning. This means it will be really important for students to make sure they are going into each teacher’s Google Classroom everyday and working on assignments. If your student is not attending office hours, I strongly suggest that your student stop into office hours for each teacher at least once per week to check in even if it is only for a few minutes and to have contact with other kids. Students and families can also email staff to check in and ask questions.
Please do your best with the assignments. We understand that there is a lot of independent learning that has to happen outside of office hours and the videos we are starting to make. (Our teachers are doing their best to start creating those videos but some have been sick, some have run into wifi issues, etc.)
Don’t stress about grades. What is important right now is the learning taking place. There is and will be, new content being introduced so that students are ready for next year. This is especially important for our 8th graders who will be headed to high school. Again, do your best to complete the assignments, turn them in, and you will receive credit for them.
Next week is spring break! Yay! Staff needs some time to rest and recharge, so please don’t expect them to be answering emails and/or pushing out new work. We will not be updating the new assignments until Sunday, April 12. Students who are behind on work can use this time to do a little catch up, but they should also try to take some time to rest too if they have been completing the at-home learning.
If you have been getting meals from the other sites (Henry Ford, Hoover, Garfield, and Roosevelt) this will continue during spring break so that families are fed.
I mentioned this last week, but wanted to remind everyone that the Sequoia Union High School District has been working with RCSD and other feeder districts to update contact information then will email out a link for selecting classes. Once I know the date they will be sending out the link I will let you know.
Collection and Distribution (Recolección y Distribución)
I am starting to work on a variety of collection/distribution items that will need to happen at some point towards the end of the school year like cleaning out PE lockers, collecting Chromebooks and musical instruments, returning borrowed books to teachers and the library, picking up honor roll goodies and yearbooks, etc. As I have more information I will send it to you, but wanted to make sure you knew I had all of this on my radar.
As far as 8th grade graduation, we will come up with some plans soon. In some of the meetings that Dr. Baker has been attending, Superintendents have started to mention ideas that the high schools have come up with that sounded interesting if we have to remain at home long-term. He is going to get more information in the next few weeks and share it with administrators.
Thank You (Gracias)
I want to thank all of the families for supporting your students during this difficult and unprecedented time. I know many of you are trying to take on the role of at-home teacher, which is tough and requires a lot of patience and balancing especially if you are trying to work from home as well. Thank you to all of those who are also considered essential workers who are still out there on the front lines working to help and serve everyone.
The District has turned on the Google Classroom parent/guardian access, which will help families to be able to see what your student is up to. The directions were just sent to teachers late this afternoon, so they need to learn how this works first. There are also parent instructions, too, but we need them in Spanish still. I will explain more and send out the parent/guardian instructions in this Sunday’s Cougar Connect.
It is with deep regret that I inform you that given the recommendations by the World Health Organization, CDC, San Mateo Health Department, the State of California, and Redwood City School District, that the Grand Canyon trip has been cancelled. Due to the health and welfare of our community, we must protect our families and young adults.
We began the process last week to start getting as much money back as possible and will be setting up a refund process. Please be patient and give us a little bit of time since we are working with a lot of different vendors that had to be prepaid to book different parts of the trip. More details about the refund will be coming soon. In order for us to work through this process the following items need to be addressed:
On Tuesday, April 21, from 10 am -12 pm and 4-6 pm, all backpacks, sleeping bags, and sleeping pads MUST be returned to the fence next to room 417 at Kennedy Middle School, which is located off Goodwin Avenue next to the front parking lot (just behind the front office). The fenceline will be marked to drop packs to adhere to the distancing guidelines. All camping gear returned will be disinfected against potential virus transmission.
We will be verifying all addresses for refunds to be mailed to.
As the payment for this year’s trip was deemed a donation and some of you classified it as a tax deduction, if you do not want a refund, please notify me by email.
As school and life hopefully return to normal, I am working with the JFKMSEEF Foundation to establish possible guidelines for next year’s trip, which will include a lottery system for open slots for students who were not able to go on the trip this year. I will be sending out a Google form in next few weeks to explain more details about the lottery system and give families the chance to express interest in being part of that lottery for the 2021 trip.
Once again, I want to thank you for your patience in this effort as the school and foundation have been working on your behalf to make this decision. If there are any questions, please email me. Please be safe.
It has been encouraged that we give middle school students a little more time to wake up and get going. So we are moving Language Arts teachers’ office hours from 8:30 am to 9:30 am. Here is the updated link for office hours:

Clubs (Clubes)
Some of you asked if we can provide some more social opportunities for students like clubs having online meetings. This is on our radar and after spring break we will try to provide some opportunities. We all have had a lot on our plates.
Anime Club did do an online meeting last week. It will meet again this week on Wednesday from 12:30-1:30 pm. It has its own Google Classroom, which has the link for the online club meetings. Please comment in the Google Classroom to request what you would like to watch so that Mrs. Marinos can have those downloaded and ready to go. If you need the Google Classroom join code, please email Mrs. Marinos. Her email address is: kmarinos@rcsdk8.net
Yearbook (Anuario)
The deadline to purchase yearbooks is technically this Tuesday, March 31. We have gotten the go ahead to extend it to next Monday, April 6, but after that we have to submit our final order. Attached is the flyer with the link to purchase online.
A reminder, don’t forget to send us at-home learning selfies and pictures this week to include in the yearbook. They can be sent to: mvandermolen@rcsdk8.net
How Does At-Home Learning Affect Next Year?
Several parents reached out to me to ask how at-home learning will affect next year, worrying that students may be behind. We had a Principal’s meeting with Dr. Baker last week and this topic did come up. Superintendents and the State are in the early stages of discussion about this. As we know more, I’m sure Dr. Baker will communicate this and I will, too.
The good news is that in April and May we dedicate a lot time prepping for State testing and then actually doing the testing. Since we won’t be testing this year this gives us more time to teach curriculum. I know the online at-home learning isn’t the same, but at least students will still be learning and making progress if they are making an effort to complete the at-home learning.
Calling All Families (Llamadas a todas las familias)
This past week we started reaching out to families to make sure everyone is doing well, families are healthy, and to check in about how the at-home learning is going. We unfortunately didn’t get to everyone last week, so we will keep going this week. If we called and had to leave a message, it would be great if you could email an administrator and/or office staff member to let us know how you are doing, if you need assistance, and/or want us to call you back.
If you are having an issue with your Chromebook, charger, or Kajeet hotspot, please fill out the District tech support form so someone can help you. Here are the links:

We gave out some Kajeets before we left school that were supposed to be activated within a couple of days and it took almost two weeks. So if yours wasn’t working, you should try again. If your hotspot still isn’t working, please reach out to me so we can try and problem solve. If for some reason you still don’t have internet please see if you can get free internet through Xfinity or Sonic. The information is below. If neither of those work then we will work on getting you a hot spot if you let me know.

Puzzles To Solve (Rompecabezas para resolver)
Here are a few math problems to solve:
In the sum, each letter stands for a unique digit (i.e no two letters stand for the same digit.) In other words, POCO is a four digit number, and MUCHO is a five digit number. Can you work out which letter stands for which digit so that the sum makes sense?
So far all students who have counseling should be able to continue with their counselors. They are working on reaching out to parents to arrange times, dates, how to communicate, etc.
If your student doesn’t currently have counseling, but needs counseling, please complete this link: https://forms.gle/RFYwSWN3QjLpFdDPA
